Dear fellow congregants,
As we enter the celebration of Hanukkah, the holiday this year has a special significance in view of the war in Israel. “Hanukkah” means “dedication” in Hebrew. At Shir Shalom, we have dedicated our prayers and our financial support toward a peaceful resolution of the war and the speedy return of all the hostages. We have received many contributions to our Israel Recovery Fund which are being forwarded to worthy causes in Israel.
Mark your calendars to be with us on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, for our Hanukkah celebration. As detailed below, the festivities begin at 5:00 pm for families and children of all ages and continue through Shabbat Services. May the warm light from our families’ and children’s menorahs brighten our spirits.

This past November I was able to participate in the North American Federation for Temple Youth (NFTY)

Collab retreat. With Shir Shalom's support, I flew out to Wisconsin with two hundred Jewish teens from all over the country. It was there that I created new friendships, worked on social justice, and connected with my Jewish community. The four days of this retreat were incredible and eye-opening. I had never been around so many Jewish people let alone Jewish teens. The first night I was there we had a Shabbat Service, and I knew I was going to have a great time. From singing Hebrew songs, dancing, and talking with others I had never felt so comfortable. I went into this retreat not knowing anyone, however, I never once felt nervous or alone. I cannot thank Shir Shalom enough for helping me participate in this retreat. It is an experience that helped me grow, and connect with more of the Jewish community.

Hanukkah Community Celebration
Friday, Dec. 15
We are collecting for our neighbors in need. Please bring new hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves.
5 pm: It’s a latkes and pizza party! Bring a plate of latkes or sweets to share. We will provide pizza.
5:15 pm: Kids' Hanukkah adventure with games, crafts, and stories!
6:30 pm: Community Candle Lighting – Bring your own menorah and candles and share in the beauty of our menorahs lit together in the Shul. This will be followed by our outdoor Hanukkah menorah lighting Services and candle lighting.

for The Upper Valley Haven
by Dec. 15
Calling all cooks, chefs, and casserole makers! Join us in supporting The Upper Valley Haven with a Woodstock Area Jewish Community meal. Please make each dish large enough to serve ~10. Dishes need to be covered, wrapped, and cooled in a container that will not be returned to you. Salads, main dishes, sides, desserts - whatever you like to eat! This time of year is great for comfort foods. Please label the dish and note any allergen info.

to Our Extended Community of
Young People (20-40)

The gravity of what is happening in Israel and Palestine is weighing on all our hearts right now. Our Israel Working Group has brought up specific concern about individuals in their 20s-40s who may not have space to connect with other Jews about their concerns and personal stress.
In response to this concern, Rabbinic Intern Ezra is collecting email contacts of young people who might benefit from pastoral outreach or an open Zoom call. Please fill out this form (click here) with the email contact of your adult children or other young people who may be in your hearts at this time.
If you submit the email address of a young person on this form, Ezra will send them one email checking in on them and inviting them to an open Zoom call as an opportunity to commiserate with other young Jews and process the events of the past month from a pastoral lens. This will not be a space in which anyone is coerced to change their political ideologies or their feelings about Israel.
