Why does the Church celebrate the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul?
On Sunday, June 29, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul to honor the two great apostles Peter and Paul.
St. Peter, one of the Twelve and the chief of the Apostles, the Rock upon which Christ built His Church, and St. Paul “called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God” (Romans 1:1) and Apostle to the Gentiles. Together they are honored as founders of the Church of Rome, having been separately martyred there during the reign of Emperor Nero.
“Christian tradition has always considered Sts. Peter and Saint Paul to be inseparable: indeed, together, they represent the whole Gospel of Christ.” (Pope Benedict XVI)

What is the Feast of the Sacred Heart?
On 25th August 1856, Blessed Pope Pius 1X inscribed the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart in the Calendar of the Catholic Church, directing that it be celebrated on the Friday after the Octave of Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) each year.
He was responding to a formal request made by Jesus Himself almost two centuries earlier in 1675 to a French Visitation nun, Margaret Mary Alacoque. ..
Jesus expressed His wish that the Feast of the Sacred Heart be a day of reparation, not for sins in general, but specifically for sins against the Eucharist which St Albert the Great considered the first gift of the Sacred Heart. This great teacher of St Thomas Aquinas marvelled at how the Eucharist was a source of great joy to the Sacred Heart; “His Heart overflowed with love at being completely one with us and filling our hearts with joy and jubilation”. First Friday & First Saturday at St Antoninus
Every month, we are exceedingly blessed at St Antoninus to have a back- to- back weekend dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This is every First Friday & First Saturday of the month.
This coming month of July however, there is a need to reschedule of our First Friday Devotion and our newly instituted 2000 Hail Marys as they both fall on the July 4 holiday.
Our First Friday devotion prayers will be held the week before, incorporated into the celebration of the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which will be on Friday, June 27, beginning with the 12 Noon Mass. (see above)
The all-night vigil of 2000 Hail Marys, normally every First Friday thru First Saturday, will be moved to Friday, July 11 from 10 pm to 5am, in Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel.
Our First Saturday Devotion to the Immaculate Heart, followed by the Healing Mass remain on schedule in July.
Normally, there are 5 Liturgies/Devotions on the First Friday/ First Saturday weekend. See below.

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION - JUNE 22, 2025
Photos and videos
| |
On Sunday, June 22, in a most glorious Corpus Christi Procession, we lifted high Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. As songs of praise and worship reverberated through loudspeakers, we jubilantly proclaimed Him as our Eucharistic Lord—present, living, and pouring out His blessings upon the streets of Newark.
Our Corpus Christi Procession began at St. Antoninus Church and made its first Benediction stop at St. Rose of Lima Church, where we were warmly joined by parishioners from the parish. As we continued our journey through Branch Brook Park, we were met by a joyful group of faithful from the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, led by our newly named Bishop-elect, the Most Rev. Bismarck Chau, who took his turn carrying the Blessed Sacrament.
The procession culminated on the steps of the Basilica, where Bishop-elect Chau officiated the final Benediction, bringing our 2 1/2 hour Jubilee pilgrimage to an exultant ending.
(The photo above captures a portion of our Corpus Christi Procession as it passed through Branch Brook Park en route to the Cathedral. Due to space constraints, the image was reduced in size and does not capture the full length of the procession—from front to end!)
