Hello Marfa,
The CEOs of National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) are scheduled to appear before a congressional hearing tomorrow, March 26, 2025. The upcoming testimony of NPR and PBS leaders before the DOGE Subcommittee raises important questions about the future of federal funding for public media.
For Marfa Public Radio listeners, this isn't just a national issue; it directly impacts our ability to serve far west Texas.
Here’s what you need to know about the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the budget concerns, and how it affects us here in Far West Texas:
Why does Marfa Public Radio matter to our community?
Reliable Information: Marfa Public Radio is a vital source of free, nonpartisan news and information, accessible to everyone in our expansive and often isolated region, regardless of their financial means.
Reaching the Entire Community: Public media's reach covers 99 percent of the U.S. population geographically. In rural areas like ours, Marfa Public Radio is often the primary source of news and information.
Community-Driven and Locally Focused: We are deeply rooted in the communities we serve. In a region with limited local media, Marfa Public Radio stands as a locally owned and operated institution.
Essential Public Safety Partner: During emergencies, whether severe weather or other critical situations, Marfa Public Radio provides crucial, up-to-date information, ensuring our community stays informed and safe.
Educational Resource: We provide access to quality educational programming, including NPR's content, which supports lifelong learning and keeps people informed on important issues.
What is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)?
The CPB is a non-profit organization established by Congress to distribute federal funding to public media stations. The CPB distributes annual grants to public radio and television stations nationwide, including Marfa Public Radio.
These grants, while for large stations represent a small portion of overall budgets, this grant especially is a large part of our budget (25%)and the threat of losing it, puts the station at a critical point for maintaining essential services.
Why does federal funding matter to Marfa Public Radio and other public media stations?
Cuts to CPB funding would significantly impact Marfa Public Radio's ability to provide local news, cultural programming, and essential services to our community.
The effects of funding cuts would be felt across all stations most especially rural ones.
