From grass roots to rebirth:
Tonari Gumi, or “neighborhood group,” was a small grass-roots organization when it began reaching out in 1974 to vulnerable seniors in the former Japantown area. Many of these seniors, who had been forcibly removed from the coast in 1942, felt disheartened and disconnected when they returned to find that the vibrant pre-war community was no longer there. In 1975, a determined nisei named Jun Hamada and a small band of dedicated shin-issei and sansei opened a drop-in centre in a rundown storefront on Hastings Street. Lonely seniors flocked to Tonari Gumi. Within a few years, demand for TG’s services doubled, then tripled. Many felt that Tonari Gumi was at the heart of a rebirth of the Japanese Community.

草の根から再生へ：
「隣組」は、かつてのジャパンタウン・日本人街があったバンクーバーイーストサイドに住み困窮する日系シニアをサポートする為に、1974年に草の根レベルで始まった小さな団体でした。1942年にカナダ西部沿岸から強制移動させられた彼らは、戦後戻ってきたバンクーバーイーストサイドが変貌を目の当たりにし、戦前あった活気あるコミュニティはもう存在せず失望と孤立感の中での生活は困難を極めていました。そのような状況の中、1974年に熱意ある浜田淳氏と一握りの日系人の若者たちが団結し、ヘイスティングス通りの空き店舗にドロップインセンター「隣組」を開設、生活支援サービスの提供をはじめました。孤独な日系シニアたちは隣組に集い、数年でサービスの需要は倍増しました。さらに需要は３倍へと増え、日系シニアはもちろん多くの人にとって日系コミュニティ再生の中心として「隣組」は欠かせない存在となりました。

Decades of community building:
In 1977, Tonari Gumi was the spark behind the immensely popular Powell Street Festival, an event that brought together many different Japanese Canadian organizations. Tonari Gumi also played an important role in the movement that resulted in the landmark federal redress in 1988.

Today, Tonari Gumi is proud of its growing range of outreach and educational services. Similarly, expansion of the lunch and social programs connects seniors and volunteers of all ages and generations. From its humble beginnings in the Powell Street area, TG now offers programs in Richmond, Surrey, Steveston and Coquitlam to accommodate our migrating seniors. Along the way, Tonari Gumi has become an organization that is recognized and respected by the federal and provincial governments, the United Way of BC and a number of private foundations. | | |

Harrison Hot Springs Trip
Tonari Gumi Social Club went to Harrison Hot Springs February 20 - 22. Besides relaxing in the hot pools, the highlight of the trip was having a delicious five-course dinner at the Copper Room while bonding with each other. After dinner, the group enjoyed live music and danced the night away! In all, 33 people participated in the trip.

楽しかったハリソン温泉ツアー！
隣組ソーシャルクラブは、2月20日から22日の２泊３日でハリソン・ホット・スプリングスを訪れました。温泉でくつろぐだけでなく、旅行のハイライトでもあるフルコースディナーを満喫し、参加メンバー同士が親睦を深める素晴らしい機会となりました。夕食後には生バンドの演奏に聞き入り、そして一晩中ダンスを楽しみ、皆さんとても素敵な時間を過ごしていました。 総勢33名のシニアが参加する楽しい旅となりました。

Tonari Gumi Family Caregiver Support Group
Tonari Gumi has been offering a family caregiver support group by zoom. Our support group provides caregivers with a safe place to share their experiences and emotions and to discuss practical tips and information on caregiving. Starting in February in 2024, we will have additional support groups in Japanese and in English. All support groups are facilitated by clinical social workers.
Participants: Currently providing care to family members (at home or remotely, or to those who live at care facilities)
Facilitators: Clinical Social Workers

Dementia Japanese Support: 1st and 3rd Fridays from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Japanese Support: 1st and 3rd Wednesdays from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm

隣組では高齢のご家族を介護している方々を支援するケアギバー・サポートグループをZoomで開催しています。自由に会話をしながら介護についてのご相談をいただき、それぞれの気持ちや経験をシェアすることで、ケアギバーの方々の支えとなる集まりを目指しています。2024年２月より現行の「認知症日本語サポートグループ」に加え、他の病気を患っているご家族や知人をケアしている方のためのサポートグループをそれぞれ開催することになりました。全グループともソーシャルワーカーによるファシリテーション（支援）となります。
対象: 現在、家族や知人をケア・介護している方（同居または遠隔、あるいは施設に入居しているご家族を介護している家族・ケアギバーも含む）

Community Service Update
oin us for the MOSAIC Seniors’ Club Musical Theatre Premiere on March 13, 2024, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm at the Michael J Fox Theatre in Burnaby. 認知症専門医として幅広い経験を持つ上野文彦医師が、認知症に関する基礎知識、最新の情報、実践的なアドバイスについてお話しします。参加者自身の経験や質問に基づくディスカッションの時間も設けており、より実践的な洞察を得ることを目指しています。ぜひご参加ください。
また、ジャムズネットカナダが2023年よりカナダ全国９都市で開催した認知症サポーターワークショップにおいて、500名以上の認知症サポーターを養成しました。この成果により、東京キャラバンメイト事務局より優良活動事例「特別賞」を受賞しました。ワークショップ後には、この成果報告会も開催予定です。
上野文彦医師プロフィール：
2010年3月慶應義塾大学医学部卒。2012年4月慶應義塾大学医学部 精神・神経科学教室入局。 2014年4月～2019年3月 国立病院機構久里浜医療センター勤務。主にアルコール依存症・ネット依存症の臨床・研究を行いつつ、月一回のペースで奄美大島で認知症専門外来を担当。 2019年4月からカナダ・トロント大学附属のCentre for Addiction and Mental Health（CAMH）へ留学。主に統合失調症の画像研究をする傍ら、高齢者病棟での臨床業務に従事。 精神保健指定医、日本精神神経学会専門医・指導医、日本認知症学会専門医・指導医、精神神経薬理学専門医・指導医
