TONIGHT'S GUEST!
Erica Armstrong Dunbar is the Blue and Gold Professor of Black Studies and History at the University of Delaware. In 2011, Professor Dunbar was appointed the first director of the Program in African American History at the Library Company of Philadelphia. She has been the recipient of Ford, Mellon, and SSRC fellowships and is an Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lecturer.

Impeccably researched, historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar weaves a powerful tale and offers fascinating new scholarship on how one young woman risked it all to gain freedom from the famous founding father.

Her first book, A Fragile Freedom: African American Women and Emancipation in the Antebellum City was published by Yale University Press in 2008.

A startling and eye-opening look into America's First Family, Never Caught is the powerful narrative of
Ona Judge, George and Martha Washington's runaway slave who risked it all to escape the nation's capital and reach freedom.  When George Washington was elected president, he reluctantly left behind his beloved Mount Vernon to serve in Philadelphia, the temporary seat of the nation's capital, after a brief stay in New York. In setting up his household he took Tobias Lear, his celebrated secretary, and nine slaves, including Ona Judge, about which little has been written. As he grew accustomed to Northern ways, there was one change he couldn't get his arms around: Pennsylvania law required enslaved people be set free after six months of residency in the state. Rather than comply, Washington decided to circumvent the law. Every six months he sent the slaves back down south just as the clock was about to expire...

Dr. Jayfus Tucker Doswell, is an African American Ph.D. in Information Technology, high-tech entrepreneur, and social activist. Dr. Doswell earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Oberlin College with degrees in Cognitive NeuroPsychology and Computer Science; a Masters degree in Systems and Computer Science from Howard University; and a Ph.D. degree in Information Technology from George Mason University. His Dissertation focused on a culturally adaptive artificial intelligent virtual instructor that can deliver instruction in mixed reality (e.g., augmented reality and virtual reality) environments. Dr. Doswell is the founder, president, and chief executive officer (CEO) of Juxtopia, LLC, (www.juxtopia.com) a privately held for-profit biomedical and information technology company with a mission for improving human performance®. Prior to starting Juxtopia, Dr. Doswell lead several commercial engineering teams at fortune 500 companies ranging from Lockheed Martin and SAIC to BearingPoint as their senior software engineer. Dr. Doswell has also successfully lead Juxtopia to secure research and development funding for the development of Juxtopia innovative wearable technology products. The Juxtopia® Augmented Reality platform is one wearable technology platform from which various wearable augmented reality products may be created for improving human performance®. Dr. Doswell lead Juxtopia to secure a contract to outfit all U.S. Army combat medics with wearable augmented reality to improve their performance during tactical combat casualty care. Dr. Doswell also invented the Juxtopia® Imhotep platform for creating wearable telehealth products. Doswell ascertains that a significant number of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are provided apprenticeships at Juxtopia.
In addition to his for profit company, Dr. Doswell created The Juxtopia Group, Inc. (www.juxtopia.org) to address the shortage of underrepresented minority populations in engineering and technology careers in year, 2000. Dr. Doswell, observing the painful-problems that prevent high-tech minority companies to achieve $1B markets, created the Juxtopia® Urban Innovation and Cooperative Entrepreneurship (JUICE) Network. The JUICE Network guides high-tech minority companies, colleges, and universities, and federal labs to transition their inventions or innovative concepts to commercial products. From the JUICE Network, Dr. Doswell helped to create Phezu Space, the first African American commercial space company in the United States focused on satellite servicing. From the JUICE Network, Dr. Doswell and two of his entrepreneurship apprentices created the 1st Morgan State University company, iCrystal, in, at that time, Morgan's 148 year history.

Alice M Delaney was born in New York City and moved to Baltimore, Maryland during her teenage  years. She attended Morgan State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications. Having a keen interest and gift for developing programs she furthered her education at the University of Baltimore and earned the Masters of Arts in Sociology with an emphasis in Human Services. Alice also pursued and attained a Masters of Education in Rehabilitation Counseling from Coppin State University where she could more focus her program interest toward mental health education. More than mid-way through Walden University's doctoral program in Health Psychology, Alice withdrew from the program due to financial, emotional and personal setbacks. Eight years later she earned her doctorate from Trinity Theological Seminary with a concentration in Christian Counseling.
A licensed minister Dr. Delaney believes that early intervention is paramount but more importantly are "help readiness" and "transformative thinking" as preparation for intervention.  Her calling is to help persons understand symptoms of distress, understand the importance of a relationship with God in addressing factors that can be stressful and finally to build upon spiritual formation research. She has developed concepts for psycho-educational programs that are relevant, creative, and culturally applicable. In February, 2012 she founded the Pathways Institute for Crisis Intervention and Education to serve as a platform to help persons better identify and get help for early psychological distress.
"We ensure that you endure and live once more" is the branding message she wants to get across in reducing hopelessness, and despair that often is associated with psychological and emotional distress.
The recently funded project A.L.I.C.E. was birthed after reading an article on Interpersonal Neurobiology-which suggested that relationships (or lack of them) can have either positive or adverse health effects. Loneliness is an adverse effect of poor or non-existent relationships. Researchers have discovered that the effects of loneliness can lead to high blood pressure, high cortisol levels, depression and a host of other illnesses. Unfortunately, due to the changing dynamics of family structure we will be faced with a deficit of family members to care for us. Technology, while not intended to replace human interaction--- may be helpful. We are hoping to discover if adverse health effects can be deterred and loneliness curtailed through its use.
