Arts Updates, Interviews, Calendar, Calls for Artists and Volunteers, Auditions --- It's All Here in Arts Blast, Arts Blast on the Air, and on Facebook. | Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere
Volume 4 No. 37 | October 14, 2022
Notes from the Editor:
You know how I have technical difficulties from time to time? Computer, internet, Constant Contact? Well, this time it's plumbing. I've been being helpful with the plumber who's working on making my laundry water stop backing up into the bathtub.. In the process of helping, I came across a snake on the enclosed back porch (help!) and was chased by a big hornet in the yard.. and it's far from over. That means I'll send out what I have now and try to get an early start on next Arts Blast over the weekend. FYI, the snake was about the diameter of a finger, more than a foot long, and RED, YELLOW, AND BLACK! I couldn't focus on whether it was red and black or red and yellow. but he isn't welcome on the porch. No idea how to make it go away.
Are you a fan of webcams? I am and there's always the danger of getting sidetracked in some of my favorites. Here's a link to a selection of St. John, USVI webcams. Yes, it really is that gorgeous.

Local favorite, author Nelson DeMille, will be at the Vero Beach Book Center October 17 at 6 p.m. with his latest, The Maze.
In his dazzling #1 bestseller, Plum Island, Nelson DeMille introduced readers to NYPD Homicide Detective John Corey, who we first meet sitting on the back porch of his uncle’s waterfront estate on Long Island, convalescing from wounds incurred in the line of duty. A visit from the local Chief of Police results in the legendary Detective Corey becoming involved in the investigation of the murders of a married couple who were scientists at the top-secret biological research facility on Plum Island.
Fast forward through six more bestselling John Corey novels and The Maze opens with Corey on the same porch, but now in forced retirement from his last job as a Federal Agent with the Diplomatic Surveillance Group. Corey is restless and looking for action, so when his former lover, Detective Beth Penrose, appears with a job offer, Corey has to once again make some decisions about his career—and about reuniting with Beth Penrose.
| |
Inspired by, and based on the actual and still unsolved Gilgo Beach murders, The Mazetakes the reader on a dangerous hunt for an apparent serial killer who has murdered nine—and maybe more—prostitutes and hidden their bodies in the thick undergrowth on a lonely stretch of beach.
As Corey digs deeper into this case, which has made national news, he comes to suspect that the failure of the local police to solve this sensational case may not be a result of their inexperience and incompetence—it may be something else. Something more sinister.
The Maze features John Corey’s politically incorrect humor, matched by his brilliant and unorthodox investigative skills along with the surprising and shocking plot twists that are the trademark of the #1 New York Times bestselling author, Nelson DeMille.
Hear the author in conversation on Arts Blast on the Air.

or call PIAS: 772-567-3520
Trees save energy, provide shade and wind breaks for our homes, cool our cities and neighborhoods, reduce the need for fertilizers, remove carbon dioxide and air pollutants from our air, retain topsoil, save water bills, provide for birds, butterflies, fish and people.
A great article on how simple tree planting can improve climate, air pollution, health, and urban heat can be found at https://nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ppp3.10245 and how to preserve our trees https://extension.psu.edu/a-guide-to-preserving-trees-in-development-projects

They beautify landscapes. Folks are happier and there is less crime. They improve and maintain the quality of water, soil, and air by removing pollutants. Houses with trees sell more quickly and at higher prices—up to 12%.
The PIAS Education and Demonstration Native Plant Garden at the County Commission entrance is educating the public that native trees and plants can be used to create a garden setting that is both beautiful and contributes to saving our environment for our future generations. So far, we have distributed over 12,400 native trees and plants.
My vision includes not spending 64-88% of my drinking water on my lawn, instead using native trees and plants that because of their deeper roots survive in Florida’s heat without my drinking water. Turfgrass roots are only 2 inches long, while native plant roots generally reach 12 inches deep. Turfgrass requires watering every few days because of the rapid evaporation of water from the surface. I envision no more gas-powered lawnmowers and blowers producing CO2 and waking me up, but quiet electric engines that allow me to hear the beautiful songs of our birds, with lots of butterflies and bees flying around.
Richard H. Baker, Ph.D., President

Good news from the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers:
Edison and Ford Winter Estates is re-opening the Garden Shoppe this Saturday, October 15 at 9 a.m. The Garden Shoppe carries exotic ornamentals, Florida natives, fruit trees, herbs, vegetables and butterfly plants. Decorative ceramic flower pots, fountains, and garden art pieces are also available.
"We know a lot of people in the area lost plants during the hurricane and want to replace them quickly," said Debbie Hughes, horticulture director at Edison and Ford Winter Estates. "We were very lucky here that many of the plants in the Garden Shoppe survived the hurricane and some are actually blooming."
| |
Guests should park on Larchmont Avenue and enter through the gate near the corner of Larchmont and McGregor Boulevard. Power is on in the Garden Shoppe and credit cards will be accepted. Members receive a discount on all retail purchases. The Shoppe will be open daily 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. New shipments of plants will arrive weekly.
The remainder of the property is still being cleared of debris and will open at a later date. Anyone wanting to help restore the gardens, may make a donation through the website at EdisonFord.org.
