Forming Safe Habits in 2025

As we begin a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on our goals and set new resolutions. At GPI, we’re dedicating our New Year’s resolution to safety. Today’s toolbox talk will focus on committing to safety, thinking safety, and forming safe habits to ensure everyone goes home healthy and whole at the end of each day.

Committing to Safety

Safety isn’t just a policy or procedure - it’s a core value here at GPI. This year, let’s commit to:

  • Following all safety protocols: Always adhere to safety guidelines, no matter how routine the task.
  • Wearing proper PPE: Hard hats, safety glasses, boots and vests on site are non-negotiable. Maintain all PPE with proper care and handling.
  • Reporting hazards: If you see something unsafe, speak up immediately. Reporting hazards protects everyone.
  • Participating in safety training: Use these opportunities to strengthen your knowledge and skills.

Commitment starts with accountability. Let’s hold ourselves and each other to the highest safety standards.

Thinking Safety

Safety begins in the mind. Developing a safety-focused mindset ensures we’re proactive, not reactive. Consider these practices:

  • Pre-task planning: Take a moment before starting any task to identify potential hazards and plan safe actions.
  • Stay alert: Fatigue and distractions can lead to accidents. Prioritize rest and focus fully on the task at hand.
  • Questioning assumptions: Just because something has always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it’s the safest way. Always think critically.
  • Visualizing outcomes: Before beginning a task, envision the safest way to complete it and work towards that goal.

By thinking safety, we can prevent accidents before they happen.

Forming Safe Habits: On-the-job

Safety becomes second nature when it’s a habit. Here’s how we can create and maintain safe habits:

  • Start each day with a safety check: Inspect your equipment, and work area for potential damage or hazards at the beginning of each day.
  • Communicate effectively: Share clear instructions and warnings with coworkers and employees on site to avoid misunderstandings.
  • Practice good housekeeping: Keep walkways clear, store tools properly, and dispose of waste promptly.

Repetition builds habits, so let’s make safety part of every action we take.

Remember this...

Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and together, we can make 2025 our safest year yet. Let’s commit to safety, think safety, and form safe habits every single day. Remember, our goal is to protect what matters most: our lives, our families, and our future.
