The Circular Economy Research Team at the Center for Community and Economic Development (CCED) at Michigan State University has released a new toolkit designed to help Michigan communities, recycling system actors, and industry stakeholders better connect with reuse markets. Reuse markets are businesses that purchase recycled and recovered materials to manufacture new products, and are essential to keeping materials in productive use and building a stronger circular economy.
The Toolkit for Identifying Reuse Markets for Recycled Material in Michigan compiles resources, data tools, and strategies to help improve coordination between recycling systems and the businesses that rely on recycled materials as production inputs. By strengthening these connections, the toolkit aims to help reduce material loss, support Michigan manufacturers, and keep valuable resources circulating within the state’s economy.
The toolkit brings together existing tools such as statewide datasets, mapping resources, and digital material exchange platforms, while also outlining strategies to improve information transparency, reduce contamination, and facilitate stronger partnerships between governments, recycling facilities, and reuse market buyers.
By clarifying how different stakeholders can work together, the publication provides a valuable starting point for communities and organizations looking to strengthen Michigan’s recycling systems and expand opportunities for material reuse.
The toolkit is now available through the Center for Community and Economic Development's website, and can be accessed below.
