Powerlifting champ Tammy Jo Remsberg proves strength can grow at any age

By Annie Doyle Grove, annie@boynecitizen.com

Tammy Jo Remsberg never set out to become a world champion. She set out to keep going.

A lifelong Boyne City resident, Remsberg, 64, recently earned the title of 2025 Masters World Champion in women’s powerlifting at an international competition in Seoul, South Korea — the culmination of nearly a decade of steady training, resilience and determination.

“I’m already getting emotional just talking about it,” Remsberg said. “It was literally a dream come true.”

When she first began powerlifting nearly 10 years ago, making a world team felt like a distant aspiration rather than a realistic goal.

“It was always something I hoped for someday,” she said. “But I didn’t know if it was even possible for me.”

That uncertainty never stopped her from showing up.

Finding strength after setbacks

Remsberg’s path to powerlifting began after her children were grown and out of the house. Looking for a new outlet, she took up distance running and loved it — until lupus-related joint pain made running impossible.

“I couldn’t do it anymore,” she said. “My knees and shins just wouldn’t allow it.”

After researching ways to stay active, she discovered strength training. She began working out in her basement, gradually building confidence and capability. What started as rehabilitation turned into passion.

“I just kept pushing forward,” she said.

The spark that changed everything came when Remsberg attended one of her daughter’s bodybuilding competitions. Watching women in their 50s compete opened her eyes.

“I thought, ‘There’s something I could do,’” she said.

She joined Anytime Fitness in Petoskey, where trainer Todd Budden suggested powerlifting — a sport focused on three lifts: squat, bench press and deadlift. Budden became her coach and has trained her since the beginning.

“He prepared me to succeed,” Remsberg said. “By the time I got to Seoul, I felt confident. I knew I could do this.”

Perseverance over age

Remsberg will turn 65 later this month, but she rejects the idea that age defines limits.

“Age has no limits,” she said. “I think it’s exciting to be doing this in my 60s.”

At the world championships, she competed alongside athletes from across the globe — some well into their 70s and 80s — reinforcing her belief that strength and growth don’t expire.

“When people tell me they’re too old, I say no, you’re not,” she said. “This is the best fountain of youth you’ll ever find.”

Remsberg trains at least four days a week, typically spending 90 minutes to two hours per session. While lupus and arthritis limit her ability to do cardio, she credits strength training with dramatically improving her health, from bone density to overall endurance.

Her perseverance was tested again two and a half years ago when she underwent a total hip replacement. Just six months later, she was back on the competition platform.

“I recovered faster than most people,” she said. “My body was strong going into it, and that made all the difference.”

Mental toughness

For Remsberg, powerlifting is as much mental as it is physical.

“Mental toughness is what strength training is all about,” she said. “When you put weight on the bar, you have to believe you can do it.”

She begins each day with coffee and readings focused on mindfulness, resilience and personal growth — a routine she says helps set her mindset long before she steps into the gym.

“You just keep moving forward,” she said. “One step at a time.”

Support at home and in the community

Remsberg credits her husband, Craig, a retired Boyne City police officer of 39 years, as one of her biggest supporters. He has traveled with her to competitions around the country and abroad, often serving as her unofficial photographer.

“He says all he does is take pictures of me picking it up and putting it down,” she said with a laugh.

Back home, Remsberg also gives back by working part-time in conditioning and strength training for Lakeside Elite Gymnastics in Boyne City. The gym’s athletes held a watch party during her world championship meet — a gesture she said meant more than any medal.

“Those are the girls I want to inspire,” she said.

Remsberg is a mother of three and grandmother of three, with two more grandchildren on the way. While she now holds a world title, she says her focus hasn’t changed.

It’s still about perseverance — continuing to show up, pushing through challenges and proving that strength can grow at any age.
