Thirty-nine graduates return to receive their IB Diplomas and/or certificates

On Thursday, December 19, thirty-nine graduates will return to receive their IB diplomas and/or certificates. At the time they graduate in June, they do not know if they passed all of the requirements for their IB diplomas and certificates. They will receive their official IB diploma at 6:30 p.m. at Farmington High School.

Two 2017 graduates, Nia Holland and Sean Williams, will be sharing their reflections on IB at the ceremony.

Part of Nia's comments include, "The IB program provided me with a unique opportunity to explore my diverse interests within a supportive environment. It not only helped me develop essential academic skills, but also shaped me into a more thoughtful global citizen."

Part of Sean Williams' comments include, "I am thankful for the time, effort, and attention put forth by the educators I had access to while I was in the program. It was such a pivotal time in shaping how I would go on about viewing the process of learning and what it truly means to be a student."

Superintendent Dr. Kelly M. Coffin attends annual Sewa Diwali dedication of donated food

Superintendent Dr. Kelly M. Coffin, along with the Mayor of Farmington Hills Theresa Rich, attended the Iskcon Farmington Hills Annual Sewa Diwali dedication of donated food for the coming year.

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. For many it is a time to reflect on the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. However, it is also a time to remember those who may not be able to celebrate in the same way - those who are struggling, facing hunger, and are in need of support.

The work "Sewa" which means selfless service, lies at the heart of this initiative. It is a call to action, reminding us that true joy comes not from receiving, but from giving to others.

The 1,300 pounds of food will assist Temple staff and volunteers with their mission of providing three meals/day to people in need and lunch to between 200-300 people every Sunday at noon.

This all fits with our Profile of a Lifelong Learner in being a Compassionate Community Member.

Student artists celebrated at Art Reception held on Monday, December 16

Students' artwork was recently selected by their art teachers to hang in the Board Room located at the Maxfield Education Center. This evening, students and their families, along with their art teachers, were invited to a special art gallery exhibit from 4:30 - 6 p.m. Schools represented include: Beechview Elementary School, East Middle School, Forest Elementary School, Gill Elementary School, Hillside Elementary School, Kenbrook Elementary School, Lanigan Elementary School, Longacre Elementary School, Our Lady of Sorrows, Farmington STEAM Academy, Warner Middle School, and Wood Creek Elementary School.

The artwork provides such a beautiful backdrop for Board of Education meetings and other meetings/events held in the Board Room.

Goodfellows Delivery Day is Saturday, December 21

The Goodfellows invite you to join them on Saturday, December 21 at 9 a.m at their 2024 warehouse location to help by making a delivery to a family or senior in need. Their warehouse is once again donated by Stuart Frankel Development, and is located at 37849 Interchange Drive in Farmington Hills. If you would like to help out, just hop in line that morning. They have 214 deliveries to make that morning. (Please note that most of the food being delivered was received from our schools during the Goodfellows Canned Food Drive. All of our efforts make a difference!!)

The High School Football, Hockey, and Swim Teams load six cars at a time, while our volunteers from Farmington Hills Police and Fire manage our dispatch and traffic. The line moves very quickly, and we are usually finished by 10-10:30 a.m. Please be sure to have plenty of room in your car. You will be delivering 2-5 very large boxes.

Each Family receives an "A" box (canned & boxed food), a "B" box (canned & dry food), and one or more toy boxes or large toys. If there are three or more children, a "C" box is added (boxed, dry and canned foods). We can only load one family per car, and please keep in mind that the 4-5 boxes for a family will not fit in a compact car, a jam packed trunk or backseat. It's very important to make sure you have room in your car before coming to the warehouse.

Seniors receive two large boxes, one with food (mostly protiens), and one with various household supplies, and a gift bag. Depending on the size of your vehicle, you may be able to deliver two senior recipients in one trip.

If any of the boxes are too heavy for you to lift, the Goodfellows can loan you an athlete from one of the three teams that work with them on Saturday - but you MUST return them to the warehouse when you are finished!

If you would like to learn more about our program this year, or to make a donation, check us out on Facebook or donate online at this link.

The Goodfellows looks forward to seeing you on Delivery Day!
