NDFA hires new Director of Regulatory Affairs, Paul Harvey
Hello NDFA and NDSA Members,
My name is Paul Harvey and I am honored and excited to start advocating for the dairy industry throughout New York, New Jersey, and New England. Born and raised in Syracuse, New York, I am very familiar with the impact that dairy suppliers and dairy food producers have in local economies. Growing up, my family and I have enjoyed many varieties of ice creams, yogurts, milks, and cheese from Upstate and Central New York as well as Western Massachusetts and Vermont. Even after moving to Southern Maryland in 2016, we still “bootlegged” Byrne Dairy Ice Cream, Whipped Cream, and Mint Milk back to have a little taste of home. After completing my masters degree in Legislative Affairs from the George Washington University in 2019, I am excited to be coming back to Central New York to replant my roots in the area and to learn more about the dairy industry and to address challenges on both the national and state level. I am also excited to get back the the Great New York State Fair to see the annual butter sculpture as well as have a cup or two of chocolate milk !

Headline of the Week

Since the beginning of the year, the markets have shown the battle between perception and reality. Dairy futures increased significantly after the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) panel finding of the inequities of the application of Tariff Rate Quotes by Canada. The panel has given 30 days for Canada to rectify this situation to conform to the USMCA trade agreement. The perception was that this would open up the potential for more exports to Canada, increasing demand at a time when the U.S. dairy herd has been contracting and milk production declining. Any greater increase in demand would mean higher prices.
