All Donations Doubled in April!

Thanks to a contribution from a generous donor, all donations made to our Spring Match Campaign are matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000!

Kitten and puppy season are upon us, meaning some of our community's most vulnerable animals will be coming through our doors. Just this week, we have welcomed in four new puppies and three moms and kittens - including these three kittens who were found abandoned in a box outside of a Walmart. Each of these will require a spay or neuter procedure, microchips, vaccines, and lots of close care and attention.

With your support, we can give these animals a healthy and happy beginning.

Please consider doubling your impact by giving to our Spring Match Campaign!

April FELV Cat Adoption Promotion

As one of the few shelters that actively accepts cats with Feline Leukemia (FELV), Five Acres Animal Shelter has received dozens of requests to take in cats with this condition. In order to save more lives, these fantastic cats need to be adopted! For the entire month of April, all fees for FELV+ cats are waived.

Even though they have weaker immune systems, cats with FELV can live relatively normal happy, and healthy lives. They cannot live with other cats who do not have the condition, but can live with dogs. They are wonderful cats who are just as deserving of a forever home - could it be yours?

Come visit our FELV rooms at our Kitty Cottage to meet your new best friend, or check out all of the available FELV cats by clicking below!

New Friends at Five Acres

It was a big week of transfers at Five Acres! As a managed intake facility, we do our best to transfer in dogs and cats from local shelters and rescues who may be over-crowded and need to free up kennel space for more incoming animals.

This week, some of the animals we welcomed in include four puppies from Fredericktown Animal Control, three young dogs from Animal Welfare Alliance of Southeast Missouri, two FELV cats from Piedmont Pound, and three sets of mama cats and kittens from various rescues.

We are so grateful for the amazing work our transfer partners do for their communities and appreciate their willingness to work together for the sake of the animals!

Puppies for Parole Program

It was a big week for four of our dogs -- Hamilton, Scarlette, Bambie, and Mike Wazowski -were transported to the Potosi Correctional Center to participate in our Puppies for Parole Program!

This program provides a wonderful opportunity for our dogs to collaborate with an inmate who is selected to be their handler for twelve weeks. The inmate handler trains their assigned pup to become a Canine Good Citizen, which includes teaching the dog to obey common commands, walk on a loose leash, know the command "place," be able to navigate crowds, and accept attention from friendly strangers. Throughout this learning process, the special bond between human and canine is both highlighted and emphasized -- while our dogs learn so much, their handlers learn just as much, if not more.

During these next few months, each of these dogs will still be available for adoption and will remain on our website! So if you're interested in any of these A+ students, we will be more than happy to review your adoption survey and set up a meet and greet -- these will just have to be coordinated in advance! We encourage you to reach out to our Canine Manager at emma@fiveacresanimalshelter.org if you are interested, as well.
