Greetings!
Every spring, like clockwork, we get new gardeners who come to the Garden Centre and ask us for tulip or daffodils bulbs to plant. They see them flowering in gardens and impulsively want to plant them for themselves. The problem with bulbs is that they require us gardeners to think ahead and plan. All spring bulbs have to be planted the fall before and have a period of freezing before they flower. So take this as your official reminder! The time is now if you want some spring cheer in your garden.
Here at Gemmell's we buy only top quality large bulbs direct from Holland. With bulbs the size and quality do matter! I always have the tried and true favourites like Apeldoorn red and yellow tulips (classics that multiply every year) to the unique and unusual like the Fritallaria Ivory Bells ( see above). I found these this season because I love unusual plants and they are actually hardy to Zone 3 unlike other Fritallarias. Another of our personal favourites that are planted in our front garden are the Allium Globemaster, giant purple balls measuring up to 8" across. Of course as always we have daffodils, muscari, crocus and hardneck garlic as well.
if you are interested in having spring bulbs for your front planter next spring then check out our Hidden Treasures Workshops ( listed below ). Liz will teach you the techniques in building a beautiful layered bulb planter.
Now that fall is in full swing we are starting to organize our holiday season and workshops( such is life in retail garden centres!) We are excited about all the new lines. Julia & I are coveting the ice blue/ silver shade we have introduced. The holiday workshops are up on the website this week if you want to have a peek.
Peace & Plants,
Kelly
