GGUSD Celebrates Top Elementary School Spellers

The excitement was electric as students from across the district gathered for the district's 38th annual Elementary Spelling Bee! Students proudly represented their schools, demonstrating perseverance and a true love of language.

After several impressive rounds and some challenging words, Sophia Hua from Hill Elementary School emerged as this year’s champion! Sophia correctly spelled the winning word, “plagiarize,” securing her place at the top. Our two second-place runner ups were Sufyan Muthazzir from Stanford Elementary and Ryan Tran from Garden Park Elementary!

The competition showcased not only strong vocabulary skills, but also courage, focus and sportsmanship from every participant. Our Board of Education members, families and staff cheered on these outstanding scholars as they gave it their all.

GGUSD Schools Celebrate the Lunar New Year

Schools across Garden Grove Unified School District are joyfully celebrating the Lunar New Year!

From vibrant lion dances to stunning Ao Dai fashion shows, campuses are filled with color, culture, and community spirit. Students, staff, and families are coming together to honor traditions, share performances, and celebrate the rich diversity that makes GGUSD so special.

These festivities highlight the district’s commitment to embracing cultures, uplifting student voice, and creating meaningful opportunities for learning and connection. Happy Lunar New Year to all who celebrate!

Pacifica High School Senior Awarded $2,000 Scholarship

There was a big surprise waiting in class for Pacifica High School senior Skye Cervantes at Pacifica High School — a $2,000 scholarship from Girls Inc.!

Skye was surrounded by cheers as Girls Inc. representatives, her parents, and GGUSD Board of Education Trustee Teri Rocco joined together to celebrate this incredible achievement.

This moment was especially meaningful as Skye’s journey with Girls Inc. began years ago when she was a student at Bell Intermediate, where she also earned a Girls Inc. scholarship. From intermediate school to her senior year, Girls Inc. has remained a steadfast supporter in her academic journey — empowering her every step of the way.

GGUSD Rings in the Lunar New Year at Tết Parade in Westminster!

With pride and excitement, GGUSD was honored to celebrate the beautiful traditions of our community and the powerful spirit of togetherness that defines the Lunar New Year. Our Board of Education Vice President Lan Nguyen, Trustees Walter Muneton and Teri Rocco, Superintendent Gabriela Mafi, students and staff showed up in full celebration mode—radiating cultural pride, unity, and the incredible diversity that makes our district shine so brightly.

From dazzling performances to eye-catching festive displays, every moment reflected the joy, resilience, and rich heritage of our Vietnamese community. As we welcome the Year of the Horse, GGUSD wishes everyone happiness, prosperity, good health, and continued success in the year ahead.

Chúc Mừng Năm Mới! Thank you to everyone who helped make this celebration unforgettable!

Hill Elementary Performs Willy Wonka

Hill Elementary students brought the magic of Willy Wonka to life with colorful costumes, lively musical numbers, and outstanding performances. Their dedication, creativity, and teamwork shined on stage, making the production a sweet success for the entire school community.

GGUSD is proud to support opportunities in the arts that help students build confidence and express their talents. Bravo to Hill Elementary for an unforgettable show!

Jordan Intermediate Students Take a Field Trip to Catalina

GGUSD is proud to share that a group of Jaguars from Jordan Intermediate recently attended CIMI Science Camp on Catalina Island, where learning extended far beyond the walls of the classroom!

During the immersive two-night experience, students hiked scenic coastal trails, snorkeled in the Pacific Ocean, climbed rocky shorelines, and stepped into the role of scientists conducting real-world investigations. In this living laboratory, they studied algae and invertebrates, explored local fish populations, and learned about deep-sea creatures through hands-on observations and experiments.

Experiences like this bring science to life by deepening understanding, sparking curiosity, and reinforcing GGUSD’s Goal 1A through rigorous and engaging learning. For some students, this unforgettable trip may even be the first step toward Goal 3 — inspiring the next generation of scientists and environmental leaders!
