Perry's Steakhouse is Bringing Back Its One-Day 79-Cent Pork Chop — But There's a Catch

Perry's Steakhouse & Grille, which started as Perry's Butcher Shop and Deli in Houston in 1979, is bringing back its 79-cent Famous Pork Chop Friday Lunch — but this year, the company hasn’t released the date to local food media. Instead, the company is only releasing the date on its own social media channels. If you’re interested in the promotion, you’ll likely want to follow the company on one of its social media channels and set it to send post notifications.

When the Flashback Friday promotion does arrive, a promotion Perry’s has brought back periodically over the years, the first 200 guests at each Houston-area Perry’s location will receive a card good for not just the traditional lunchtime pork chop meal, but also a new offering, a Caramelized Prime Rib Steak Sandwich meal. Each location will serve up to 100 of each. Once they’re gone, no additional lunches will be offered at the special 79 cent price. That also means that getting your preferred meal will depend on how quickly you get in line.

Perry’s signature lunch-cut pork chop comes with whipped potatoes, homemade applesauce and freshly baked bread. The new Caramelized Prime Rib Steak Sandwich has pecan-wood-fired prime rib and is served with fries and horseradish cream.

On the promotion date, doors will open at 10:30 a.m. To get the deal, guests must be 21 or older, and the promotion is dine-in only.

The Famous Pork Chop Friday Lunch normally costs $22 plus tax and gratuity. Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille has six Houston-area locations: Champions, Memorial City, Katy, Friendswood, Sugar Land and The Woodlands.

Burger Watch: Old-School Joint in Montgomery Offers Thick Burgers, Hand-Cut Fries & Blue Bell Shakes

No one's leaving hungry after this burger. Photo by Mario-Sebastian Berry.

by Mario-Sebastian Berry

Mario-Sebastian Berry recently headed north to World’s Burgers at 18438 TX-105, a small, locally owned shop in Montgomery near Lake Conroe. Founded in 2011 by Eva and Louis Alonso, this family-operated spot is an old-fashioned burger joint that’s easy to miss from the road.

The burger sports a thick, coarsely ground Angus beef patty that's peppery and cooked through, as well as chopped iceberg lettuce, thin tomato slices and rough-cut white onions. The interior of the homemade, preservative-free bun is toasted, giving the edges a buttery crispness.

The hand-cut fries are cooked in peanut oil, with crunchy edges and hot, fluffy centers. They have a subtle sweetness and earthy flavor that makes them especially good with the burger.

Blue Bell Ice Cream shakes come from an old-school mixing machine, while the menu also offers hand-cut onion rings, tacos, chile con queso, kosher beef hot dogs, chicken sandwiches and mozzarella sticks.

Combos run about $15.75 or less, while burgers and sandwiches average around $7.75 à la carte.

Could the restaurant use a little TLC? Sure. The walls wear a waxy patina from years of searing burgers, long-retired equipment occupies some floor space and the wet-floor signs look like they may have achieved permanent residency.

But here’s the thing: the burger is great, the fries are fresh and the prices are like somebody still remembers what a neighborhood burger is supposed to cost. World’s Burgers isn’t polished, but I'll happily take it over another sterile burger box any day.
