Celebrating

America’s 250th Anniversary!

Please proudly display

the American Flag

As our nation approaches the historic milestone of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, there is no better time for residents to come together in a shared expression of pride and unity. One of the simplest - and most meaningful - ways to do so is by proudly displaying the American flag at your home or business.

The American flag stands as a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of our country. For 250 years, it has represented the ideals that bind us together—liberty, opportunity, and community. Displaying the flag is more than a gesture; it is a visible reminder of the sacrifices made by generations of Americans and a celebration of the future we continue to build together.

Whether mounted on the front of your home or flown from a flagpole each flag contributes to a broader sense of civic pride. Neighborhoods adorned with red, white, and blue serve as a unifying tribute to this once-in-a-generation anniversary.

As we prepare to celebrate this historic occasion, we ask that you proudly and properly fly the American Flag by raising it respectfully, illuminate it at night if flown after dark, and maintain it in a good condition. These small acts reflect the deep respect we share for our nation and its history.

Let this anniversary be an opportunity to renew our sense of community and patriotism. By proudly displaying the American flag, we honor 250 years of American history - and help inspire the generations still to come.

Clean Up Fort Wright

A special thank you

to our Volunteers!

Litter is more than a blight on our landscape. Litter is costly to clean up. It impacts our health and well being. It threatens our environment and wildlife. It finds its way into our waterways and oceans. What’s also true is that litter is a solvable problem!

Recently, we had a group of dedicated & hardworking volunteers participate in our Annual Spring Clean Up Fort Wright Day. In just two (2) short hours on a recent Saturday morning they collected 76 Bags of Trash. We would like to take a moment here and thank all of those individuals who participated in this special event. We are grateful for your service to our community, and we couldn't do this without your help and support.

For anyone wishing to find out more about how you can get involved and help keep Fort Wright Beautiful please contact us at: info@fortwright.com.

Every Second Counts:

Make Finding Your Home

in an Emergency Easy

When seconds matter, the smallest details can make the biggest difference. Clearly displaying your house numbers is one of the simplest yet most important steps you can take to help emergency personnel find you quickly in a crisis. Whether it’s police, fire, or medical responders, they rely on visible, easy-to-read address numbers to locate your home without delay. If your numbers are faded, obstructed by landscaping, or difficult to see at night, it can slow response time—something no one can afford during an emergency.

Experts recommend placing house numbers where they are clearly visible from the street, using large, high-contrast lettering, and ensuring they are well-lit after dark. Reflective materials or backlit numbers can make a significant difference, especially in poor weather or low-light conditions.

It’s also important to pay attention to your mailbox. For many responders, especially in rural or suburban areas, mailboxes serve as a key point of reference when identifying addresses. If your mailbox is damaged, leaning, or missing numbers, it can create confusion and delay. Taking the time to repair or replace a worn mailbox — and ensuring it displays your address clearly—helps maintain a reliable marker for your home.

In an emergency, every second counts. Keeping your house numbers visible and your mailbox in good condition is a simple, proactive way to help ensure first responders can reach you as quickly as possible when you need them most.

Safe Internet Shopping

Exchange Zone

In today’s social media world more and more people are conducting the exchange/sale of items through the internet. Routinely, the buyer and seller meet in public locations to make the exchange of sale items. This practice of meeting in a public location is a wise move in these situations, and we discourage you from inviting strangers to your home for this purpose.

As a result, we have established a Safe Internet Shopping Exchange Zone at City Hall. The main parking lot area adjacent to the City Building at 409 Kyles Lane is under 24 hour video surveillance and you have access to an emergency call system. Additionally, our police department operates out of the adjacent building   We strongly encourage the use of this location for facilitation of “Internet Shopping Exchanges”.

Flag Retirement Drop Box

Located at City Hall

Rules on how to properly fly the flag were established in June 1923, when the National Flag Conference met in Washington, D.C. Its members created the Flag Code, which states that "the flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing."

The US Flag is considered a sacred symbol and as such care should be given to its disposal. Anyone wishing to dispose of a US Flag that is torn and/or worn and thus no longer servicable can drop if off at City Hall in our Flag Retirement Drop Box. Staff will then properly and respectfully dispose of them.

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

After careful deliberation, City Council recently made the difficult decision to remove the “Tot Lot Playground” (Tot Lot) play equipment behind City Hall. I wanted to update you on this decision and our plans to find alternative recreational opportunities in the community for our children.

This issue was discussed and acted upon at several public meetings over the last several months based on the following factors:

1.    At the time of construction of the Tot Lot roughly 30 years ago, the emergency call volume in the city was substantially lower than it is now. Over time, it became apparent that having a playground nestled between emergency vehicles moving at high rates of speed and heavy equipment was increasingly risky. In the not-too-distant past, a child on a bike was hit by a Police Officer in the City Building parking lot. Thankfully, the child was not injured. As call volumes increase year after year, the risk of a child getting seriously injured or worse is of significant concern.

2.    The existing play equipment was 30 years old and needed to be replaced for safety, usability and aesthetic reasons. It also did not meet modern standards for recommended safety fall zones and surface materials.

3.    Additionally, we need a location to store salt for road treatment in the winter months. We currently utilize storage facilities on Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 (KYTC-D6) property and getting access to it has been challenging at times. Additionally, KYTC-D6 has told us that to store salt there, we must purchase it from them at a much higher price than we currently pay.

As far as replacing the Tot Lot, City Council has decided to set aside a portion of the former Fort Wright Civic Club (FWCC) site, for a playground designed for a wide age group of children. The play structure is currently being designed, and we are working through the acquisition process, which may require bidding the project to be compliant with purchasing regulations established by the Commonwealth. Our engineering team will be on-site next week to survey and locate utilities. Once the order is finalized, there will be several weeks of lead time to receive the equipment and have it installed. We hope to have it in place as soon as possible and we should have more specific details to share soon.

As you may know, we are evaluating not only the construction of a playground on the FWCC site but also a picnic shelter. We see the transformation of this property occurring in three phases. Phase 1 being the playground, Phase 2 being a shelter with picnic tables, and Phase 3 being other recreational options which may include a new civic center. Of course, budgeting is always a concern as are impacts on the neighborhood, and the City’s Working Group on recreational/community properties continues to actively evaluate Phases 2 and 3.

The now vacated Tot Lot site will house our salt storage facility. Having salt and de-icing materials available on-site will greatly improve our ability to keep roads clear and safe and will ultimately save the city money. Additionally, in the event of multiple storms, suppliers can run short of salt or prioritize larger cities, so having our own supply fully under our control solves that problem and allows us to avoid waiting for deliveries during regional shortages.

Additionally, salt prices can swing wildly during harsh winters, so buying salt in bulk during the off-season means we can lock in contracts before demand spikes and avoid “panic pricing” when everyone else is scrambling. This new facility will also keep salt dry, contained, and prevent runoff into nearby soil and waterways.

As these projects move forward and plans are finalized, we will share more information in Council meetings, in our newsletter, and through our social media outlets.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve our community, and we are excited about how these two projects will benefit our City.

Best Regards,

Dave
