Fort Wright Police Offers Crime Prevention
Tips for Winter Weather Months
As temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, the Fort Wright Police Department reminds residents that a few simple precautions can go a long way toward preventing vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles. Making vehicle security part of your daily routine can help protect your property and keep our community safe.
Residents who park their vehicles outside overnight are encouraged to take a few moments before heading inside to secure their vehicles and remove valuables. Unlocked doors, keys left inside, and items visible through windows can create easy opportunities for thieves.
The Police Department recommends the following precautions:
- Remove your keys and key fob. Never leave them inside your vehicle, even when parked in your driveway.
- Secure firearms. Never leave firearms unsecured in your vehicle. Stolen firearms can potentially end up in the wrong hands.
- Take valuables inside. Remove purses, wallets, backpacks, computers, laptops, tablets, and other electronics. Even an empty bag can attract unwanted attention.
- Keep belongings out of sight. Whenever possible, take valuables inside rather than leaving them in your vehicle.
- Lock your doors and close your windows. Do this every time you park your vehicle, even at home.
- Double-check your vehicle. Before calling it a night, make sure your vehicle is locked.
Cold Weather Reminder - Don't Leave Your Vehicle Running Unattended
On cold mornings, it may be tempting to leave your vehicle running to warm it up before heading into a store, gas station, or other business. However, an unattended, running vehicle can provide an easy opportunity for a thief to drive away.
Never leave your vehicle running unattended while you go inside a business or in front of your home. Stay with your vehicle while it is running, and never leave your keys or key fob inside an unattended vehicle.
A few seconds of prevention can save you a major headache. The Fort Wright Police Department encourages residents to make these simple precautions part of their everyday routines and to share these reminders with family, friends, and neighbors. Together, we can reduce opportunities for theft and help protect our community.
See something suspicious? Call 911 or contact non-emergency dispatch at 859-356-3191.

Why Your Address Matters:
Keeping YOUR Insurance Premium Tax Dollars in the City of Fort Wright
Residents of Fort Wright may not always realize that something as simple as the City listed on their insurance policies can have a meaningful impact on our community. Insurance premium taxes—applied to policies such as homeowners, auto, and life insurance—are collected based on the City listed as your address. These funds go directly to support essential local services, including police and fire protection, infrastructure, and community improvements.
Because many Fort Wright residents have a mailing address that defaults to Covington, insurance providers may incorrectly assign your policy to Covington. This means the associated tax revenue - which the City of Covington assesses at a higher rate than the City of Fort Wright - goes to the City of Covington or another adjacent community if listed as such instead of supporting the services you rely on here at home.
The City of Fort Wright maintains a lower insurance premium tax rate than the City of Covington, making it both financially beneficial for residents and vital for our City’s continued growth that policies are properly coded. By ensuring your insurance provider lists your address as “Fort Wright” rather than “Covington,” you help keep those dollars invested in your own neighborhood.
What You Can Do:
· Review your current insurance policies and billing addresses.
· Contact your insurance agent or provider if your city is listed incorrectly.
· Request that your billing address be updated to “Fort Wright, KY.”
This small step helps ensure fairness, supports local services, and strengthens the future of Fort Wright. Thank you!

Beware of Black Friday Scams:
Shoppers Urged to Stay Alert
As Black Friday approaches, shoppers are being warned to watch out for online scams and fraudulent deals that could put their money and personal information at risk.
Scammers often take advantage of the excitement surrounding Black Friday by advertising fake discounts, creating imitation shopping websites, and sending emails or text messages offering deals that seem too good to be true. Some scams also use fake delivery notifications to trick shoppers into clicking dangerous links.
Consumers are encouraged to shop only on trusted websites, check website addresses carefully, and avoid clicking on suspicious links. Using secure payment methods and never sharing personal or banking information with unknown sellers can also help prevent fraud.
Experts remind shoppers that if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Taking a few extra moments to check before making a purchase can help protect consumers from losing money this Black Friday.
Stay smart, shop safely, and don't let scammers ruin your holiday season!

Safe Internet Shopping
Exchange Zone
In today’s social media world more and more people are conducting the exchange/sale of items through the internet. Routinely, the buyer and seller meet in public locations to make the exchange of sale items. This practice of meeting in a public location is a wise move in these situations, and we discourage you from inviting strangers to your home for this purpose.
As a result, we have established a Safe Internet Shopping Exchange Zone at City Hall. The main parking lot area adjacent to the City Building at 409 Kyles Lane is under 24 hour video surveillance and you have access to an emergency call system. Additionally, our police department operates out of the adjacent building. We strongly encourage the use of this location for facilitation of “Internet Shopping Exchanges”.

Fort Wright Completes 2026 Street Program, Plans Additional Improvements for 2027
The City of Fort Wright is pleased to announce the completion of its 2026 street improvement program, with work finishing approximately one month ahead of schedule. Jefferson Contracting was awarded the project earlier this year and completed the reconstruction of Hazelwood Drive and Elder Court.
The project involved the complete removal of the existing pavement on both roadways, followed by reconstruction with new concrete. Underdrains were also installed beneath the streets to direct water toward the storm drainage system. These improvements will help protect the roadway and underlying subgrade from water damage, extending the life of the streets and helping preserve the City's investment in its infrastructure. The total contract cost for the project was $498,960.
Looking Ahead...
2027 Street Improvements
The City's focus in 2027 will shift to resurfacing several roadways. Valley Plaza Parkway and Viewpoint Drive are scheduled for improvements that will include milling the existing asphalt surface, repaving, and re-striping. Recessed pavement reflectors will also be installed along Valley Plaza Parkway to improve visibility for motorists traveling at night.
During the winter months, the City will work with its engineers to complete the design process, with the project expected to go out for bids in late winter.
Grant Funding Supports
Future Roadway Projects
We have also been awarded a grant through the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments (OKI) to resurface Highland Avenue from Kyles Lane to the city limit near Cityscape Drive. The grant will cover 80% of the construction cost, with the City responsible for the remaining 20%. This heavily traveled roadway is in need of a new pavement surface, and work is anticipated during the 2027 construction season.
Additionally, the City recently learned that it has been awarded a grant for resurfacing Amsterdam Road. Further details about that project will be shared as they become available. A separate grant application has also been submitted to resurface the City's portion of Farrell Drive.
The City of Fort Wright remains committed to maintaining and improving its roadways through planned infrastructure investments and grant opportunities. These projects are designed to enhance roadway conditions, improve visibility and drainage, and extend the useful life of our streets for the benefit of residents and motorists throughout the community. For more information please contact our Public Works Director Jeff Bethell.

Is Your Home Ready for an Emergency?
How to Prepare to Shelter in Place
Emergencies can happen with little or no warning. Severe weather, hazardous material incidents, power outages, or other unexpected events may require residents to remain inside their homes until it is safe to go outside. Being prepared ahead of time can help protect your family, reduce stress, and provide peace of mind when it matters most.
The City of Fort Wright encourages residents to take a few simple steps now to prepare their homes and families in the event they need to shelter in place.
Build an Emergency Supply Kit
Keep essential supplies in an easy-to-access location so your family can manage for several days if necessary. Your kit should include:
- Bottled water and nonperishable food for at least three days.
- A manual can opener and basic eating utensils.
- Flashlights, extra batteries, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio.
- A first-aid kit and necessary medications.
- Personal hygiene items, sanitation supplies, and moist towelettes.
- Blankets, extra clothing, and sturdy shoes.
- Cellphone chargers and backup power banks.
- Copies of important documents, emergency contacts, and some cash.
- Supplies for infants, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and pets, as needed.
Be sure to check your supplies periodically, replace expired food and medications, and keep batteries charged.
Know How to Shelter Safely
If authorities instruct residents to shelter in place, remain indoors and follow official instructions. Depending on the type of emergency, you may need to close and lock windows and doors, turn off heating or cooling systems that bring in outside air, and seal gaps around doors or windows. These steps can be especially important during certain hazardous material incidents.
Keep in mind that sheltering procedures vary by emergency. Follow instructions from local emergency officials, and do not evacuate or leave your home unless directed to do so or remaining inside becomes unsafe.
Make a Family Emergency Plan
Talk with your family about what to do if an emergency occurs. Identify a safe room or interior space, determine how family members will communicate if separated, and keep a list of emergency phone numbers. Make sure everyone knows where emergency supplies are stored and how to receive alerts and updates.
Residents should also consider how they would assist family members or neighbors who may need additional help during an emergency.
Stay Informed
Keep your cellphone charged and enable emergency alerts when available. A battery-powered or hand-crank radio can be valuable if electricity or internet service is unavailable. Monitor official City of Fort Wright communications and instructions from emergency management and public safety officials for reliable information.
A little preparation today can make a big difference tomorrow. By gathering essential supplies, developing a family emergency plan, and knowing how to respond to local alerts, Fort Wright residents can help keep themselves, their families, and their community safer when unexpected emergencies arise.
