What to do if you see a coyote while walking your dog?
Encounters with coyotes may happen at the park, on a hiking trail or in residential areas. Not all encounters will result in conflict. Dog-owners can protect their pets by taking preventive measures before coming face-to-face with a coyote.
Tips to keep your dog safe from coyotes while on a walk:
1. Always use a leash. Not only is an off-leash dog in public illegal, it is also dangerous for your pet, other animals and people. Larger dogs may engage a coyote while smaller dogs may bark or run away. A leash, no longer than six feet, helps you maintain control over your pet.
2. Take a personal protection device. If conflict with a coyote or another canine arises, stopping a fight could cause injury. By taking a protection device, such as an umbrella or walking stick, you’re better equipped to neutralize the situation. Potentially saving yourself a trip to the hospital or vet.
3. Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid distractions like earbuds or cell phones. Keep an eye out for coyotes, loose dogs, or other potential threats. Startled coyotes and dogs may respond in fight mode. Avoid walking late at night and in the early morning when coyotes are most frequently seen.
4. Pick up small dogs if you see a coyote. Animals smaller than the coyote, about 20- 35 pounds, are especially vulnerable. Small dogs can be considered prey. A spike vest adds a layer of armor for your pet.
5. Never turn your back and run. Coyotes are canines. When you turn your back or run, it invites canines to chase. It also teaches them humans are afraid of coyotes. Instead stop, shout, and make yourself look big and intimidating.
Walks are a highlight of any dog’s day. Keeping them safe and happy is a pet-owners responsibility. If dog owners are aware coyote encounters may occur they can take steps to avoid negative coyote interactions.
