When the "Q word," as we call it, is uttered, it has a funny way of turning a peaceful day upside down.

On an overcast and chilly Saturday just a few weeks ago, we were reflecting on how slow the day was going. We had animals available for adoption, yet very few folks had stopped by to visit.

Then the “Q-word” slipped out, and the floodgates opened.

The phone rang, and on the other end was a panicked individual.

He explained that at the end of his trash route the previous night, he found three plastic totes and, when he approached, heard some sounds coming from within. To his surprise, the totes were filled with kittens and cats! He wasn’t sure how many but guessed over 15!

He just found them there – no note, food or water.

Only one of the totes had makeshift airholes.

The Good Samaritan took the kittens and their mamas home for the night. He and his family cared for them until the morning when they called WCHS for help. Their stressed voices settled when we told them to come right in.

Yet, our voices elevated with anxious anticipation as we rushed around, preparing for their arrival.

Darting around the temporary shelter—the old shelter is under renovation, and we are sheltering animals in the clinic addition—we grabbed food, water bowls, extra expansion cages from storage, vaccinations, de-wormers, and the “ringworm light” and set up a “triage” station.

After completing the paperwork, we lined up several containers and examined, vaccinated, and cared for the 19 kittens and three mothers. We walked around to ensure everyone was comfortable before turning off the lights for the night.

When we returned the following day, we noticed one of the mothers was in active labor! She had delivered one kitten.

Never say the “Q-word” at WCHS because it may result in 20 kittens and three mamas!

This is the day in the life of the staff at WCHS – a community-centered life-saving shelter.

While we love to help kittens and all animals in our community, it takes many hands and big hearts. Thank you to everyone who donates, fosters, volunteers, and adopts!

Within a few days, all the kittens and moms were in foster homes, getting the love they needed for a healthy start in life. Once they reach the right age/weight, we will get them back in for a spay/neuter day, and they will go up for adoption.

Check the website and Facebook page...as we don't have exact times for their return.

I'm Sebastian - I am a cute boy who loves to talk and have life my way when relating to others. My love language is verbal and not overly physical. I would do best with an adult with similar preferences. We can hang out together and eat meals while watching birds and talking. You in your chair and me in mine.
