Prepare like a Professional!
Spring is here on Lake of the Woods and Walleye season opener is right around the corner!
With the cooler weather forecasted right into early May, we're looking forward to a great season for Walleye fishing and couldn't be more excited to get out for some fishing!
Wiley Point Lodge Professional Guide Matt Dyment tells us a little bit about how he prepares for Walleye Season:
As an avid angler and professional fishing guide, spring is my favorite time of the year when it comes to targeting Walleye and Bass! Casting the shorelines can produce some incredible results for both big shallow water Walleye and schooled up active Bass!
Lures of choice for walleye include basic 1/4-3/8 ounce jig tipped with a white fluke 3-4 inches in length as well as a X-rap (10 size). I always start with silver and white colored lures as it matches the bait fish perfectly. The smallmouth bass fishing in the spring time is some of the best bass fishing you will find, casting small 3-4 tubes or crankbaits into the shallows of southern facing rocky shorelines produces non stop action.

The Ice is out and the grass is green!
The 2017 Ice Out was an early one! After a few weeks of warm weather, the snow was melted, the grass was turning green and we were keeping a close eye on the ice!
The ice was officially out the night of April 15th. On April 16th we awoke to nothing but open water as far as the eye could see in Long Bay!
We enjoyed about 10 days of beautiful spring weather before Mother Nature threw us a curve ball and temperatures dropped again and a foot of snow fell! After a few days of blustery November type weather, Mother Nature gave us our spring weather back and we enjoying the long awaited Spring! We are looking forward to seeing you soon!

A LETTER FROM ERIC BROWN ...
|
Hello Everyone, This is Eric Sr and I thought now that the ice is out and the fishing season is about to open I would send everyone the latest
updates.
As most of you know Eric Jr suffered a traumatic brain injury last August from an ATV accident on his 40
th
birthday and was hospitalized for over three months, of which the first 30 days was in the intensive care unit in a coma where we did not know if he would live or not.
After intensive rehabilitation Eric was able to learn to talk, walk and eat again and while it will still be a long haul of many years of rehabilitation he is doing well and hopes to see everyone this summer although he will not be ready to go back to work anytime soon again yet.
I personally stepped away from the business temporarily the past nine months and stayed by Eric's side to help him recover every step of the way. I signed eight releases for life saving operations and it was the worst time of my life. That being said, it has also been inspiring to watch my son's strength and determination to never give up and to hopefully and eventually fully recover, some years down the road and he is truly my hero.
Unfortunately now that I find myself back to work and ready to open this spring we find our bookings down for which I blame myself for being away so long and I am making a call to rally all of our great long time guests who have been great friends all these past 40 years since I have been here and I am asking for your help to book a trip to continue the Totem Resorts traditions.
As always we did a lot of work to all three lodges over the winter including remodeling cabins, docks, boats and much, much more. We are the most ready we have ever been to start a season and now all we need is your support and my entire family will be deeply thankful and grateful for every guest who comes this season to help us out after a very tough year.
Another reason I am writing this letter is to assure all the guests that have had some doubt as to whether I would be back this summer running the show and I wanted to assure everyone that I am now back 110% and that the quality and great fishing trips you've all come to know will continue. I've had a few people ask me if I would be back this summer and it's prompted me to wonder if that may be the reason some of you haven't booked yet. I can assure you that myself, Sandra, my children Dustin and Stephanie, as well as our Operations Managers Crissy & John, will be running all 3 of the lodges at the same high caliber you've all come to expect.
Early ice out April 15th
traditionally means great fishing and I hope we hear from you soon and for those who booked already thank you from the bottom of my heart. United we will stand. We truly are asking for and counting on your support with this call to action season. Thank you!

The Grandchildren are Growing Up
Eric IV (Reeder) celebrated his 8th birthday just last month. When we asked Reeder if he felt any different now that he was 8, his reply was priceless "Yes, I feel much older today! The world looks different too!" Reeder is looking forward to the summer off school and doing some biking, swimming and playing soccer before starting grade 3 in the fall.
Happy 8th Birthday Reeder!
Can you believe that Baby Rush turns 1 this week?!?! How time flies when you are having fun! He just keeps getting cuter by the day and his favorite activies include eating everything, crawling at the speed of light and climbing on things. He will be walking any day now!
Happy 1st Birthday Baby Rush!!!
Addison turned 9 back in December and can't wait for school to be out for the summer too. She starts grade 5 next year.
