TouchUps weekly
Greetings!, this is your newsletter for May 13, 2020
Guild Banner

TouchUps has been our more-or-less weekly Guild newsletter for quite a few years now. The format and tools have evolved over time and likely will continue to evolve in the future. I have enjoyed doing our newsletter but now it is time for new blood. This is my last TouchUps .

Claude Dupuis has agreed to take this over. Claude is a talented woodturner, who has served on the Steering Committee for many years. He organized our last Symposium and is a past President. If you are sending material to him, remember that source material that can be copied and pasted is greatly appreciated. Claude can be reached at .

Register for “Morning with a Plane Maker”

We are pleased that Dan Schwank, owner of Red Rose Reproductions, will join us Saturday, May 16, at 10 a.m. to talk all things wooden planes and custom-made tools.

As with the successful virtual program with Patrick Edwards this past Saturday, we will have a presentation followed by a Question and Answer session. This one will run about two hours and be on the “GoToMeeting” platform. There is no charge to use GoToMeeting or to join the meeting. Instructions will be included in email after you register.

Dan struck out on his own in 2017 after years as a Tool & Die Maker to open “Red Rose Reproductions.” Some of you may remember that in 2018, he supplied custom, tapered and radiused blades and beech blanks to many members when we did our reproduction, Dutch hand-plane series.

Dan will explain his journey into tool-making. Then he will show and discuss some of the molding planes he makes. Many of these are based on successful British designs. To get a flavor of the planes and other tools he makes regularly in his Illinois shop click here.

You can read more about Dan and see his fine tools at Red Rose Reproductions.
Hands-On CAD
with Bruce Wedlock

The GoToMeeting live classroom Hands-On CAD , teaching the essentials of 3D modeling for woodworkers, will begin on Friday, May 15 at 9:00 am. Everyone is invited to watch this first class which will start with a demo of drawing Tom McLaughlin’s Shaker End Table . Students will download a free demo version of the software Argon to enable them to execute exercises during class as well as homework. Sessions will be recorded so they can be reviewed at one’s convenience. Members are also welcomed to just watch the class without the software.

Instruction will involve learning the CAD operations and their vocabulary to create 3D solid models. It will be similar to learning tool usage to create a piece of furniture. We will start by learning the basic CAD tools—drawing lines, circles, etc. followed by generating 3D solid models. A table with complications like tapered legs chamfered and rounded edges, and dovetailed drawers will be designed. We will also cover reeded legs and turned spindles.

Learning CAD software programs requires a substantial commitment of time, just like it takes to learn to build a Shaker table. This demo version of Argon will not allow saving, printing or exporting drawings, but will allow you to create drawings with no time limit on its usage. Basic drawings created in class will be available for you to upload and work on. Should you decide to acquire the software, the cost for a permanent license for retired, non-commercial use is $525. This is a fixed fee, not a subscription.

We plan to hold two classes a week at 9:00 am on Mondays and Fridays. If you wish to participate or just attend the meetings, send Bruce Wedlock an email at indicating your preference, and you will get the meeting link via email.  If you wish to participate in the class, you will also receive the software download instructions. You will need either at PC or Mac (not Catalina at the moment) to run this software, and a trackball mouse is strongly recommended.
Member Forum—Take Advantage

The member forum is a good way to network with other Guild members during this shut down. You do not need a forum account to view what is up there. But by creating an account of your own, you can participate in the discussion, create a topic, ask questions, and best of all receive an email anytime a new post is created.

Please refrain from posting copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you. A quote or perhaps a few sentences if attributed from copyrighted material is OK. But please use caution as this is a public forum.
