Happy Veterans Day
Granite State Woodturners

A live virtual (Zoom) demo by Rick Manganello is in the planning for November 27th at 7pm.

Our November Meeting will be hosted by Rick Manganello, our new GSWT President. It’ll give us a chance to get better acquainted with Rick and tour his shop. He will share lessons learned by a beginning woodturner, including tools and gadgets, both good and bad. With luck he may even come up with something to demonstrate. Attendance is FREE. Register HERE

John Jordan
Turning a Small Lidded Jar
Saturday, November 21, 2020
3 p.m. Eastern Time

Join us online for an exclusive experience with the extraordinary John Jordan, AAW Honorary Lifetime Member and celebrated woodturning master.

John will turn a lidded jar with lathe-turned texture from green wood. You’ll see use of a side-ground bowl gouge, shear scraper, hollowing tools, and more, as well as hear about options for lids, including hammered metal. You’ll find out about using green wood for finished, refined pieces; a simple method for hollow turning and fitting a lid to the vessel after drying.
All experience levels are welcome.

Registration is open through Friday, November 20, at noon Eastern Time.

Hello everyone,

I have some news!

First off, my wife and I are going to try being 'snow birds'. Valerie retired from teaching this year and we are headed to Florida to enjoy our new condo. As for our school, I have recruited a top notch group of instructors to carry on with the classes. You may read about them on our website. Just click on the instructor page.  www.woodschoolnh.com

I have also posted some new classes for 2021, and am adding more all the time. Keep an eye out for your favorite class and sign up quickly before they are full.

Marcel Durette, our woodturning instructor has requested that he be allowed to step back and have someone else teach the classes. I hesitate to use the word retiring, because I'm not willing to let him go that easily. Marcel has been a staple here for many years and will surely be missed. How much will he be missed? Well, I am not a numbers guy, but I do like to keep accurate records. I did some research and came up with some astonishing facts!
Here's what Marcel has done for us since he took over teaching for Andy Motter in 2007.
Taught the Thursday eve course 35 times which adds up to 280 classes with 248 students!
41 Bowl turning classes with 319 students
18 Christmas tree ornament classes with 149 students
31 Project classes with 239 students
12 misc classes with 49 students

Have you been doing the math? Marcel has taught a total of 382 classes with a total of 1004 students! I'll bet he has no idea how many people he has helped learn how to turn. Here at the Homestead Woodworking School, we not only help people advance in their craft, but we build relationships and friendships. If you are one of the over 1000 students who has been in Marcel's classes, and would like to send him a note of thanks and gratitude, you may email him at marceldurette@aol.com .
As for me, from the bottom of my heart......Thank you Marcel. I love you man.

What do we do now? Matt Newton has agreed to take over and continue our wood turning program. Matt comes to us with years of experience turning, and learning the craft. You may have seen Matt teaching at the Woodcraft store in Newington, or bumped into him at a woodturning symposium. Matt is enthusiastic about woodturning and is anxious to share his talents with you.

Stay safe my friends and work safely.
Alan
As you may have heard, the Guild is starting up a new magazine (The Old Saw Resharpened to be edited by Mike DiMaggio) the last quarter of this year. We also will continue with The Journal in the spring.

We would like to include two long time features in both publications...Q&A and Member Gallery and I will continue to handle both of those features. But we are running out of material for both and need to replenish.

So, please send woodworking related questions for Q&A and/or good photos with a description for Member Gallery to me at membership@gnhw.org

Member Forum—Take Advantage

The member forum is a good way to network with other Guild members during this shut down. You do not need a forum account to view what is up there. But by creating an account of your own, you can participate in the discussion, create a topic, ask questions, and best of all receive an email anytime a new post is created.

Please refrain from posting copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you. A quote or perhaps a few sentences if attributed from copyrighted material is OK. But please use caution as this is a public forum.
Welcome to each new member who joined the Guild last month. Please make these members welcome should you see them at your next meeting.

Check out the member directory (login required). Car pooling to a meeting is a great idea.

Guild Branded Merchandise

The Guild store is back!

The Guild has sold guild branded shirts and hats at cost to the membership for many years.

You can order from the online store or contact Bob Wyatt at merchandise@gnhw.org. He may be able to bring an item to a mutual meeting.

You can find the new online store at GNHW.org/store.

New Videos Added to Our Library

Guild library videos are a long standing tradition with the Guild. What began as a lending library documenting many Guild demonstrations and lectures at general meetings, subgroup meetings and symposia presentations, was eventually converted from VHS tapes to DVD format and later available on our website.

We have several new videos from our recent foray into video conferencing.

More will be added as they are developed in the coming weeks.

Small Meetings
These meetings are generally held in small shops or other environments which require limiting the number of attendees.

All person to person meetings are temporarlly on hold. For now all future meetings are virtual meetings.
More small meetings are always being added, so check the coming events below.
