Headwaters region well represented at the 2017 Ontario Tourism Awards of Excellence
 
The Headwaters region will be well-represented at the 2017 Ontario Tourism Awards of Excellence with representation as finalists in four different categories. Congratulations to:
Shelburne's STREAMS Community Hub in the running for $100,000 in Aviva funding
   
Shelburne's STREAMS Community Hub is an arts-centred, youth-focused, inspiration community space in Shelburne.  This initiative was recently accepted as a candidate to receive $100,000 in Aviva Community Funding
 
Support this opportunity for funding by casting your VOTE between October 10th and 19th, 2017.

2017 marked the eighth year that the Town of Orangeville has held an event to celebrate the arts and announce the recipients of arts and culture awards. The recipients of the 2017 awards:
  • Established Artist of the Year: Leisa Way
  • Emerging Artist of the Year: Andrew Cleveland
  • Student Artist of the Year: Jessica Anderson
  • Arts Educator of the Year Award: Heather Holmes
  • Community Arts Volunteer Advocate Award: Harvey Kolodny
  • Community Impact by an Organization Award: HatsOnDufferin, accepted by Stephany St. Louis
  • Community Impact by a Business Award: Orangeville Dairy Queen Grill and Chill, accepted by John Lockyer
  • Creative Cultural Event Award: Peter Pan, Theatre Orangeville Drama Young Company, accepted by Sharyn Ayliffe, Duncan Lang, and Harrison Matthews.

2017 Caledon Mayor's Business Awards  
 
October is Small Business Month and in Caledon it was kicked off with the Small Business Summit Awards Gala. Caledon Mayor Thompson presented awards to three very deserving Caledon businesses:

To recognize a Caledon small business leaders' contribution to protecting the environment.

Food Entrepreneurship: from concept to kitchen to commercialization

The Orangeville & Area Small Business Enterprise Centre and the Ministry of Research and Innovation present the 2017 Bridges to Better Business Conference.
  • Dana McCauley, Executive Director of Food Start, will share proven strategies that will help food entrepreneurs get a strong start, cultivate steady growth and reap ultimate success.

If so, the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation's (OTMPC's) Tourism Industry Partners Program (TIPP) may interest you.

Investing in workforce development programs 
 
The Ontario Tourism Education Corporation (OTEC) in partnership with Ontario Restaurant Hotel, Motel Association (ORHMA) will bring together regional stakeholders including employers, educational institutes, employment service providers and workforce planning boards to develop strategies that align training with the skills needed by businesses to enable the sector to grow and compete in the new economy.

Greater Toronto Hotel Association provides update on hotel tax
 
 
Further to the announcement of the 2017-18 provincial budget, the government of Ontario has provided permissive authority to municipalities to implement a new municipal sales tax on transient lodging. To clarify, permissive authority does not require municipalities to implement the tax. As you are aware there are some municipalities currently who are looking at the potential of the implementation of the tax including the City of Toronto and the City of Mississauga in o ur membership area. Others outside the GTA are also reviewing this option.

Public notice: Alton Village construction 
 
The Region of Peel is developing plans for the proposed improvements to Main Street South / Queen Street East (Regional Road 136). The proposed work is scheduled for 2018. The Region is dedicated to keeping its infrastructure in good repair. The proposed improvements will improve safety, provide connectivity to features and attractions, and encourage walking and cycling within the village.

 
 
 
Town of Orangeville seeking submissions for Canada 150 art legacy project  
 
Thanks to funding support from the County of Dufferin, the Canada 150 Wall will be a community art project in the form of a large-scale mural that celebrates Canadian and local themes. Members of the community are invited to participate in the program by submitting artwork, with 50 selected pieces being showcased on aluminum panels on the lobby wall at the Alder Recreation Centre. Designs may be in any visual medium - digital, photography, sculpture, textile, painting, sketching etc.
