Dear Partners,

There’s so much to consider this week, that I thought I’d leave the expression to the poets. This one (sorry about the length) is from M. Scott Momaday of Santa Fe. We would welcome the chance to highlight works from our own poets. Please send my way!
In the Time of Plague

We keep indoors.
When we dare to venture out
We are cautious. Our neighbors
Smile, but in their eyes there is
Reserve and suspicion.
They keep their distance,
As we do ours, in mute accord.
Much of our fear is unspoken,
For there is at last the weight of custom,
The tender of rote consolation.
We endure thoughts of demise
And measure the distance of death.
Death too wears a mask.
But consider, there may well be good
In our misfortune if we can find it. It is
Hidden in the darkness of our fear.
But discover it and see that it is hope
And more; it is the gift of opportunity.
We have the rare chance to prevail,
To pose a resolution for world renewal.
We can be better than we have ever been.
We can improve the human condition.
We can imagine, then strive to realize,
Our potential for goodness and morality.
We can overcome pestilence, war and poverty.
We can preserve our sacred purpose. We can
Determine who we are in our essential nature
And who we can be. We are committed to this end
For our own sake and for the sake of those
Who will come after us. There is a better future,
And we can secure it. Let us take up the task, and
Let us be worthy of our best destiny.

Statewide restrictions reimplemented

Governor Newsom announced on Monday the suspension of indoor operations at all restaurants, wineries, tasting rooms, family entertainment centers, zoos, museums, and cardrooms in California. Bars, pubs, and breweries were directed to halt all operations.

Additionally, all counties on the state watch list, which includes Sonoma County, were told to close gyms/fitness centers, places of worship, indoor protests, offices for nonessential sectors, personal care services (nail salons, body waxing, and tattoo parlors), hair salons/barbershops, and indoor shopping malls.

Lodging properties continue to be permitted to remain open for leisure travel in Sonoma County.

Tourism Cares save the date

Tourism Cares “Hospitality Counts” census awareness event
Sat, Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. – noon

Sonoma County Tourism is proud to partner with the U.S. Census Bureau and CAP Sonoma for our next Tourism Cares event, centering around census awareness.

The central component of this event is a census caravan. A parade of vehicles will drive through a route of census designated “hard-to-count” neighborhoods to encourage census participation.

Volunteers will be encouraged to decorate their vehicles to grab the attention of onlookers. Some materials will be available the morning of the event for this purpose.

Participants will be treated to individually packaged COOKIE...take a bite! treats, and the vehicle deemed best decorated will win a premium tin of COOKIE...take a bite! goodness.

Volunteers will be needed not only for the caravan itself but for pre-caravan activities.

Please know that this event will adhere to the strictest standards of health and safety protocols. All volunteers/participants will wear masks outside of their vehicles and will respect physical distancing.

The results of the 2020 Census will help determine how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding flow into communities every year for the next decade. Please consider joining us on Aug. 1 for this worthy cause. Full details and registration will be made available next week.

Another USA Today 10best nomination

Vote for your favorite nominee once per day until voting ends on Monday, August 12 at 9 a.m. You can read the official Readers' Choice rules   here and vote here .
Spirit Works named 2020 Distillery of the Year

Spirit Works Distillery has been named “2020 Distillery of the Year” by the American Distilling Institute (ADI), winning its prestigious national Bubble Cap Award.

The Bubble Cap Award is given to “the one distillery of the year that represents the very best in the world of artisan distilling: excellence in quality of spirits, innovation, transparency, authenticity of approach, sustained company growth, community involvement, and embodying the ethos of craft.”

By ADI’s definition, a craft distillery must produce less than 100,000 proof gallons per year, be independently owned and operated, and must actually distill their own products.

Sonoma County Tourism extends a hearty congratulations for this well-deserved honor.
