Today's Takeaways

From SCT's Research and Data Systems Manager, Allie Nordby:

The August 2025 edition of The State of the American Traveler by Future Partners reveals that wellness is a major motivator for U.S. leisure travel, especially among Millennials, Gen X, and higher-income households. Over 45% of travelers frequently or always plan trips to support their physical, mental, or spiritual well-being. Despite economic concerns—like recession fears and elevated stress levels—travel sentiment remains strong, with nearly 86% of Americans having at least one trip planned and average annual travel budgets hovering around $5,840.

Fall travelers, in particular, report higher life satisfaction, lower stress, and greater spontaneity. They’re more receptive to destination marketing through social media and favor domestic hotspots like New York and Las Vegas, along with international destinations such as Italy and Japan. The survey also notes rising interest in travel tied to major upcoming events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and America 250 celebrations.

Here are a few other notable insights from the travel and tourism sector:

Visit California CEO: Visa fees add barriers to California’s global reach, Visit California - The Visit California CEO’s August 2025 update highlights growing concerns over new visa-related fees that could hinder international travel to the U.S., especially to California. A newly implemented $250 “Visa Integrity Fee” and increased ESTA costs are expected to discourage visitors from key markets like Mexico, China, and India. Visit California projects a 9.2% decline in international visitation this year, with cost cited as the top barrier by 42% of travelers across its 13 priority markets. In response, the organization is adjusting its focus: 87% of its FY 25/26 budget now targets domestic marketing, up from 79% last year. Despite global headwinds, domestic travel remains strong, accounting for 94% of all visits in 2024, and Visit California’s campaigns have generated $31.5 billion in incremental visitor spending statewide.

Canadian Travel Sentiment Towards Travel to the U.S. Study, Longwoods International - The August 2025 update from Longwoods International reveals a significant decline in Canadian travel sentiment toward the U.S., with 63% of Canadian travelers saying they’re less likely to visit due to American policy and politics. Key concerns include U.S. tariffs, economic policies, and political rhetoric—especially comments about Canadian sovereignty and social issues. As a result, Canadian visitation to the U.S. fell 19% through June compared to the same period in 2024. Many travelers are choosing alternatives: 42% are opting to stay within Canada, while 30% are heading to destinations like Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean instead.

US hotel growth forecasts lowered for 2025-2026, U.S. Travel Association - CoStar and Tourism Economics have revised their U.S. hotel growth forecasts for 2025 and 2026 downward due to slowing demand, inflation, and shifting travel patterns. The updated projections show modest declines in key metrics: demand, average daily rate (ADR), and revenue per available room (RevPAR). Despite these reductions, industry leaders remain cautiously optimistic, expecting a rebound as trade negotiations conclude and the Big Beautiful Bill Act takes effect. Extended-stay hotels have seen six consecutive months of declining occupancy, though they still outperform the overall hotel sector. Meanwhile, Dallas leads the nation in hotel construction, and multifamily sales in Washington, D.C., surged in Q2, signaling renewed investor confidence.

Airbnb Reports High Customer Satisfaction with Services, Experiences, Phocuswright - Airbnb’s Q2 2025 earnings report highlights strong growth driven by its newly launched Services and refreshed Experiences offerings, which received higher customer satisfaction ratings than home listings. CEO Brian Chesky emphasized the company’s vetting process for experience providers and noted a major shift in user behavior, with more travelers engaging in “browse and discovery” mode on the homepage (similar to Netflix or DoorDash). This shift has boosted cross-selling opportunities during trips. Airbnb is also investing in AI-powered customer service tools and exploring a future loyalty program. Financially, the company saw a 13% increase in revenue year-over-year, reaching $3.1 billion, with notable growth in international markets like Germany, Brazil, and Japan.

The Future of Wellness trends survey 2025, McKinsey - This McKinsey article on the future of wellness outlines how the global wellness market is evolving into a more personalized, tech-driven, and values-based space. Consumers increasingly seek holistic well-being across six key dimensions: health, fitness, nutrition, appearance, sleep, and mindfulness. The report highlights a shift toward hyper-personalization, with AI and digital tools enabling tailored wellness experiences. It also notes rising demand for clean, transparent products and a growing preference for brands that align with consumers’ ethical and environmental values. As wellness becomes more integrated into daily life, companies are adapting by offering more accessible, inclusive, and digitally enhanced solutions to meet these changing expectations.

Freedom, Flexibility and Transparency: What Gen Z Travelers Really Want and Need, Phocuswright - What Gen Z travelers value most when planning and booking trips are freedom, flexibility, and transparency. Shaped by social media and the pandemic, Gen Z is adventurous, spontaneous, and heavily influenced by platforms like TikTok when choosing destinations. They prefer visually engaging, user-generated content and expect seamless digital experiences—favoring apps over phone calls and traditional booking funnels. Price matters, but convenience often takes precedence, especially for hotel bookings. Gen Z also favors alternative payment options like buy now, pay later, and shows little interest in loyalty programs. As AI tools like ChatGPT gain traction, the travel industry is adapting to meet Gen Z’s tech-savvy expectations.

Micro-Cations Surge as American Summer Travel Trend, Travelpulse by Northstar - Micro-cations are redefining the American summer getaway. Due to economic pressures and limited time off, many are opting for trips lasting four nights or fewer, often spending more per night to maximize the experience. One-night getaways now average around $700, and over a third of Americans plan to take vacations lasting just two nights or less. Despite inflation, affluent travelers are still booking multiple trips, and there's a rising demand for curated experiences that make short stays feel indulgent—think early check-ins, late checkouts, and food credits.
