SLHTA invited to share Agrotourism best practices at IICA CTA Regional Workshop
Since 2012, CTA and IICA have joined forces in raising awareness on Agrotourism in the Caribbean Region amongst the various chain actors and, importantly, amongst the policy makers. Under the Intra-ACP envelope of the 11th EDF, a ‘basket’ of funds in the amount of 35 million Euros has been approved for Agrotourism development in the Caribbean Region.

CTA in collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), organized a three-day regional workshop from the 9th to 11th October 2019 at The Radisson Aquatica Resort, Bridgetown, Barbados.

The key outputs of this workshop were the identification of priority areas for the development of a regional project for funding under the 11th EDF, and identification of the policies and mechanisms that need to be put in place to facilitate trade and investment between Agriculture/Fisheries and Tourism in the Caribbean.

The SLHTA’s CEO Noorani Azeez was invited to present on our Virtual Agricultural Clearing House, which was viewed as a best practice in using information and communication technology to facilitate trade of agricultural produce with the tourism industry.

Forging Agriculture-Tourism linkages capitalizes on the inherent ability of the Tourism sector to diversify the Caribbean economy, stimulate entrepreneurship, catalyse investment and assist in wider social development in local communities. Such linkages offer unprecedented opportunities to stem and reverse the declines in traditional agriculture, stimulate the rapid growth in “new‟ agriculture and build resilience and sustainability of Caribbean economies. The latter is particularly critical for reducing the high levels of foreign exchange leakage in tourism, preserving cultural identity, reducing poverty in local communities and enhancing local awareness and good practices with respect to climate change and environmental issues.

CEO Noorani Azeez met with President Karolin Troubetzkoy, 1st VP John Mathurin, 2nd VP Erwin Louisy and Immediate Past President Sanovnik Destang to review the workplan of the Secretariat as we enter our new financial year 2019-2020. As the demands from our members increase, the organization is tasked with ensuring efficient deployment of scarce financial resources to ensuring these demands are met.
Key elements of the discussions included hosting of more events to drive networking among members, strengthening the use of social media to market members’ offerings, membership growth strategies, policy issues, Secretariat HR matters and issues of Corporate Governance.
SLHTA undertakes Institutional Review and finalizes Strategic Plans 2019-2021

On Tuesday 8th October, SLHTA President Karolin Troubetzkoy and CEO Noorani Azeez met with consultants Agnes Francis and Betty Perry-Fingal to conduct a final review of the SLHTA’s draft Strategic Plans 2019-2021.  Over the past few months, the consultants have held numerous meetings with members and our Board of Directors to review issues, challenges and opportunities in an effort to craft the way forward for the Association.  A key consideration of this exercise has been the streamlining of the organization to improve our value to our members. As the organization continues to attract more members, understanding members’ needs and meeting these needs are of even greater importance.  Once the draft is completed, the document will be submitted to the SLHTA’s Board of Directors for ratification and incorporation into our annual work plans.

Another key output of the consultancy will be the redrafting of the SLHTA’s Bye Laws to ensure the 258-member company organization continues to provide adequate representation of our members at a Board level.  As the organization prepares for our 1st Quarterly General Meeting of Members in November, consultation will continue to ensure enforcement of the proposed amendments, well ahead of our AGM next year.
