COVID-19: Information Updates
Trails Reminder
Maintaining social distancing isn’t always a walk in the park! With warmer weather, Happy Trails use has increased significantly. Sometimes it’s difficult to stay 2-metres (or 6 feet) from others using the walking paths. Remember to step off the path if another person is coming towards you, if needed to keep a 2-metre buffer. Cyclists should ring a warning bell to let walkers know they’re approaching from behind .

Annual Spring Thaw Brings River Monitoring
Weekly river updates and river monitoring signs will keep everyone informed of the current status of the Highwood River. Town staff check key monitoring stations to collect data specifically for the Highwood River basin.

This data includes daily, real time information about the snowpack and snowmelt as the river makes its way towards the Town, descending 1,500 meters from its source in Peter
Lougheed Provincial Park.

LED signs in high traffic areas will advise of the current river status. Monitoring will continue until the end of June.

For more information, visit the River Monitoring section of our website.

12 spots are available for the session starting in Fall 2020.

Application deadline is May 31, 2020. The start date will be dependent on physical distancing requirements.

Interested students should contact Michael Koehler at [email protected]
Pesticides
Throughout the spring and summer, residents will see Parks staff hand pulling weeds and using high pressure water sprays on trees as part of the Town’s Integrated Pest Management strategy. Parks staff do not use pesticides often but will on occasion utilize chemicals in order to prevent the spread of pests, such as weeds, insects and Richardson ground squirrels. Signs are posted at least 48 hours in advance of spraying and remain for 24 hours after the application. Pesticides are only applied by qualified individuals and typically in the early hours of the morning. Where signs are posted, residents are asked to keep their vehicles clear of trees and other park spaces to allow crews to do their work.
