Honoring OLLI's Past Presidents
|
|
This week we honor
Lucy Strasburg (2011-2012).
Lucy’s first volunteer tasks at OLLI were as office volunteer coordinator, and nominating chair for Council elections. During her term as Council president, on Nov. 2, 2011, OLLI received its second grant of one million dollars from the Osher Foundation. Council studies focused on building stronger connections with SOU. Course selections were offered using on-line support for the first time. Challenges with the growing membership and the limits of the facilities continued. Lucy still volunteers in the OLLI office.

Spotlight on Shared Interest Groups:
Anthropology, Evolution, Animal Domestication
We are a group of OLLI enthusiasts who are interested in human and non-human evolution (so the latest on whether dinosaurs were homeotherms is fair game!). We have a subject or theme each meeting and also have time for wide-ranging discussions. We have looked at animal domestication, especially that of dogs and cats, and all the latest on new finds in human ancestors. We explore genetic research in all these areas as well. We share the latest info from reputable sources (Science/AAAS, AAA, other journals) and focus our discussion on evidence-based conclusions as well as new theoretical frameworks. And we have one heck of a lot of fun! For more information, contact Victoria Leo at 253-203-6676 or

SOU is excited to announce that the Pacific Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has decided to hold their 100th annual meeting on the SOU campus from June 18 to 22. The AAAS is the world's largest and most prestigious general scientific society with over 120,000 members nationwide. This is the 100th annual meeting of AAAS’ Pacific Division.
Over 250 scientists from around the world are expected to attend the conference. In addition, the
meeting organizers have made a special effort to engage both organizations as well as individuals in the local area, including OLLI.
The meeting itself is highly inter- and multi-disciplinary and will include a broad range of topics many with local interest. With respect to science and technology the meeting will include sessions for example on:
* Local climate change
* The local consequences of the opioid epidemic
* Sustainable agriculture in the Rogue Valley
* Preserving pollinators
* Additive Manufacturing
* The biology of aging
* The future and opportunity of personalized medicine
Linking to local culture, the meeting is organizing sessions with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to consider human behavior from a theatrical and neurobiological point of view. The meeting also is also seeking to link science to art, with the meeting’s opening reception to occur concurrently with the public opening for the Schneider Art Museums new summer exhibit on Science and Art. The meeting will also consider society subjects like, the implications of artificial intelligence in human society, the opioid epidemic, as well as several sessions on the history and philosophy of science and contemporary issues related to Library Science. The meeting will also include several sessions on educational technology and new ways to engage students in learning.
For more information including registration links and fees, please visit the Pacific Division of AAAS on the web at
