Welcome Message from Town Manager Robert W. Seltzer

Welcome to the April edition of the Town's e-newsletter.

Spring has finally sprung and, although we still may have some April showers this month, we can begin to look forward to the longer days of sunshine and warm weather that lie ahead.

The Town will be conducting tours of the OVERBROOK ACADEMY property located at 60 Austin Avenue. The recent announcement of the tours on the Town's webpage and social media sites received an overwhelming response and tours have already sold out. We may be scheduling additional tours in May but, in the meantime, a virtual tour will be coming soon to the Town's webpage for you to view.

The Town is committed to transparency and community engagement as we evaluate future uses of this property. These tours provide residents with a firsthand look at the facility and an opportunity to become part of the conversation moving forward.

On Monday, April 13th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., a Community Information Meeting will be held with Rhode Island Energy at the Smithfield Senior Center. The evening, hosted by Senator David Tikoian, Representative Greg Costantino, and Representative Paul Santucci, will provide residents with an opportunity for account questions and information on bill assistance, energy efficiency, and other valuable resources. Please call 401-286-5854 to reserve your place as seating is limited.

SAVE THE DATE: The Smithfield Conservation Commission's annual Tree Day sale is taking place at Pleasant View Elementary School on Saturday, May 2nd from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. The Commission will be selling "Sweet Pepperbush", 2' high in #1 pots for $5.00 each.

SENIOR CENTER/HUMAN SERVICES

DID YOU KNOW???..... What is Brain Health?

Brain health refers to how well a person’s brain functions across several areas. Aspects of brain health include:

  • Cognitive health — how well you think, learn, and remember
  • Motor function — how well you make and control movements, including balance
  • Emotional function — how well you interpret and respond to emotions (both pleasant and unpleasant)
  • Tactile functions how well you feel and respond to sensations of touch, including pressure, pain, and temperature
  • Sensory function — how well you see, hear, taste, and detect odors

Brain health can be affected by age-related changes in the brain, injuries such as stroke or traumatic brain injury; mood disorders such as depression, substance use disorder, or addiction; and diseases such as Alzheimer’s and related dementias.

REFUSE AND RECYCLING

Yard Waste Collection Resumes this Month!

Lawn and Yard Waste pickup begins during the first full week of April. Yard waste is collected on residents’ regular trash day on a route separate from trash and recycling.

Yard waste must be set at curb in brown paper bags (available at local retailers) or barrels clearly labeled YARD WASTE. Yard waste in plastic garbage bags or cardboard boxes will not be collected. *A maximum of 12 barrels and/or bags of yard waste is accepted per household.

Yard waste will be collected every week April through May; every other week starting June through October, and every week through November. Please see the recycling calendar for exact dates.

Composting is a great way to reduce curbside yard waste collection requirements. Compost bins are available to residents for $45 each at Smithfield Public Works located at 3 Spragueville Road (behind Dave’s Towing Service).

Please contact the Smithfield Recycling Coordinator at 233-1034, x205 or send an email to recycle@smithfieldri.gov with questions.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Spring Forward — Check Your Detectors!

Daylight Saving Time in 2026 begins on Sunday, March 8, at 2:00 a.m. local time, clocks spring forward — and that's your reminder to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

A working detector can mean the difference between life and death. Take two minutes this weekend to:

  • Press the test button on every smoke and CO detector in your home
  • Replace the batteries if the alarm sounds weak or doesn't sound at all
  • Replace the entire unit if it's more than 10 years old
  • Make sure you have both a smoke detector AND a CO detector on every level of your home

Carbon monoxide is odorless and invisible — you won't know it's there without a working detector. Don't wait until something goes wrong.

When you change your clocks, change your batteries.

Stay safe,

Derek Keene
