SENIOR CENTER/HUMAN SERVICES
| | |
DID YOU KNOW???..... The Senior Center serves as a local distribution point for Meals on Wheels?
Three days a week local volunteers come to the Senior Center to pick up and deliver meals to our neighbors in our community.
Each March, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island unites donors, community partners, and elected officials to spotlight the vital role nutrition plays in health, independence, and well-being.
Why it matters: March for Meals commemorates the 1972 amendment to the Older Americans Act, which established national nutrition programs for seniors. The campaign brings together clients, sponsors, donors, and elected officials to showcase our impact and celebrate community.
This year, our fundraising goal is $113,000, helping ensure homebound seniors across Rhode Island continue receiving the meals and care they need.
Please visit the Meals on Wheels March for Meals to make a donation.

HOUSE DISTRICT 53 GRANT SUPPORTS FIREFIGHTER HEALTH AND SAFETY INITIATIVE
The Smithfield Fire Department was recently awarded a $1,000 House of Representatives Legislative Grant from Representative Paul Santucci. This grant will provide professional inspection and cleaning services from RedLine, a company specializing in first responder equipment maintenance, directly addressing critical health and safety concerns for first responders serving House District 53.
RedLine will deploy its Mobile Extraction Unit® (MEU) directly to the fire station to professionally clean and inspect firefighting gear in accordance with NFPA 1851 national safety standards.
Firefighting gear accumulates carcinogens and toxins during fire operations that pose serious long-term health risks to our personnel. As first responders, we face many dangers we cannot control in the line of duty. However, contaminated gear is a preventable risk that we can and must address.
Professional cleaning removes hazardous materials that accumulate on protective equipment, while thorough inspection identifies damage or wear that could compromise firefighter protection during emergency operations. These services are essential for reducing cancer risk and other health complications associated with prolonged exposure to fire-related contaminants.
This investment demonstrates our Department's commitment to ensuring our members can serve the community safely and return home healthy to their families. Through this grant, we're taking proactive steps to protect those who protect us.
Stay safe,
Derek Keene
