Walk of Light Remembrance Ceremony Honoring the 25th Anniversary of 9/11

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Town of Windsor will host a Walk of Light community remembrance ceremony on the historic Windsor Town Green beginning at 6:00 PM on Friday, September 11, 2026.

2,977 decorated luminary bags - each inscribed with the name of a person who lost their life in the terrorist attacks, will line the sidewalks of the Windsor Town Green. At dusk, the luminaries will be illuminated with glow sticks, creating a powerful tribute to those who perished on that tragic day.

The remembrance ceremony will feature participation from Windsor Fire, Police, and EMS personnel, as well as members of the Windsor clergy. Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to stroll through the town green, view the luminaries, and reflect on the events of September 11th in their own way.

This year's event marks the sixth Walk of Light held since 2001. The tradition began on the first anniversary of 9/11, September 11, 2002, and has continued every five years as a meaningful way for the community to honor and remember the lives lost.

Following the opening ceremony, the illuminated display will remain on view until 9:00 PM, providing visitors with an opportunity to pay their respects and remember the victims, families, first responders, and all those affected by the events of September 11, 2001.

Freedom Trail Run

The Freedom Trail Run will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 5:30 AM – 8:30 PM. The starting point is Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, 320 Hayden Station Road. Starting at the historic Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, we will be visiting 6 Freedom Trail sites along the 3.9 mile route. This event is free and open to the public. Please bring a non-perishable food item(s) to be donated to the Windsor Food Bank. Participants will get a free country style breakfast after the event. Also, on Saturday, September 26, 2026 starting at 7:00 AM will be the annual Freedom Trail walk. This walk follows the same route as the run with the starting point being Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, 320 Hayden Station Road.

Community Tag Sale

The Windsor Lion’s Club will be holding a Community Tag Sale on Saturday, September 19, 2026 from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM on the Windsor Town Green, 275 Broad Street (rain or shine). There will be an array of items up for sale such as books, home décor, toys, etc.

All proceeds from the event will go to Camp Rising Sun, a place where kids with cancer have fun.

Windsor Fife and Drum Corps Annual Muster

Windsor Fife and Drum Corps Annual Muster is Saturday, September 12th from 11:00 AM until approximately 2:00 PM on the Windsor Town Green.

Pedestrian Bridge Repair and Replacement Project

Later this fall, October into November, the previously approved project to repair and replace several pedestrian bridges will be underway.  

Bridges at Custer Park, Wilson Gateway Park, and Stroh Park will be completely replaced. This work is expected to take roughly 5 days for each bridge and be completed the first week of November. 

The bridge at Sharson Park and one on the Windsor Center trail will undergo repairs.  Each of these bridges will be out of service for varying lengths of time based on the type and scope of repairs.  The Windsor Center trail bridge is the larger of the two and will be unusable for approximately one month or so.  

Staff is working with the selected contractors to confirm project timing and work schedule. We will notify abutting property owners as well as the general public once project schedules are confirmed. 

Main Library HVAC and Water Conditions

As some may have read a recent on-line story concerning building conditions at the main library, I wanted to provide some information.

There were issues with the building’s air conditioning system earlier this summer. The mechanical failure of a pump resulted in water leaking onto a portion of the program area.  This AC system was repaired and has been operating for the remainder of the summer.  

In the lower level near the portion of the building that was constructed in 1777, there was apparent groundwater issues early this summer due to the high water table.  Staff continues to troubleshoot this periodic issue.

As you will recall, the Council previously authorized the Public Building Commission to initiate an engineering assessment of the building roof, the HVAC system and the building’s windows. A draft report with suggested options has been presented to the PBC and the final report is expected in the next several weeks or so.   

The multi-year CIP shows funding allocated for HVAC work in FY 27 and roof replacement in FY 28. 

Paul Goldberg, Long Time Fire Administrator Retires

Paul Goldberg retired last week after 26 years as our Fire Administrator. His dedication and effort over the many years strengthened the volunteer fire department as well as many other town departments. In addition to his primary role as Fire Administrator he has been like a ‘utility infielder’ in baseball.  He has had a role in many areas including being an integral player in upgrading and managing our emergency communications and radio system, leading our emergency management and preparedness efforts, along with working to achieve savings through negotiating town wide cell phone and printer contracts.  

Paul helped generate revenues for the town by managing several cell tower land leases. He has been a fine colleague and has consistently demonstrated the Town’s core values of innovation, responsiveness, passion, integrity and partnership. While his smile and good nature will be missed here at Town Hall his many positive contributions will be felt across the organization and community for years to come.
