The MDC is in the process of reviewing their proposed budget for 2027. There are two primary parts to the MDC budget – the water budget and the sewer budget. The water budget is essentially funded through customer service charges and fees, while the sewer portion of the budget is funded through town taxes which is referred to as the Ad Valorem Tax Assessment.
The preliminary budget indicates a 3.95% increase in water rates. A variety of other fees, such as fire protection rates for businesses and the monthly customer service fee are proposed to increase. The annual fire hydrant maintenance fee the town pays is proposed to increase by $10 per hydrant which would increase our cost to approximately $55,000 in FY 28.
The overall sewer budget is proposed to increase just under 6%. Nearly half of the increase is directly related to the first year operating cost of the new South Hartford Storage Tunnel and Pump Station as part of the Clean Water project.
The town’s sewer assessment is projected to increase $538,000 as currently reflected in the MDC proposed budget. The assessment is based on the town’s tax collections in proportion to the tax collections of the other seven member towns.
The MDC is scheduled to hold a Public Hearing on November 9th at 5:30 PM regarding the proposed budget and water rates. The MDC Board of Directors is slated to adopt the 2027 budget on December 7th.
