National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week

April 17-21, 2023

National Work Zone Awareness Week is an annual spring campaign held at the start of construction season to encourage safe driving through construction work zones. The key message is for drivers to use extra caution in work zones, so everyone makes it home safely.

A work zone is typically marked by signs, traffic control devices, barriers, pavement markings, and/or work vehicles. It’s critical that all road users approach work zones with caution and do their part to keep the road safe for everyone.

Work zones need everyone’s undivided attention. When approaching a work zone, motorists should always slow down, follow all posted signs, be alert, and remain calm. Risky driving behavior affects more than just the driver – everyone’s lives and families are at stake.

Summary of Most Recent Available Data from 2020 (workzonesafety.org):

  • 156 Pedestrian fatalities in work zones (2020).
  • 244 Commercial Motor Vehicle involved crash fatalities.
  • 857 Total Work Zone fatalities.
  • 44,000 estimated work zone injuries.
  • 102,000 estimated total work zone crashes.

Coffee With the Mayor

It was another full house at Town Hall for this month's Coffee with the Mayor series. Mayor Bien-Willner spoke to residents about Short Term Rentals in Paradise Valley, highlighting the history and status of PV's regulation of these properties. The Mayor also highlighted the web page, where residents can access all of the Town's STR resources, including permitting, complaints, and an STR property map. You can view those resources at: https://www.paradisevalleyaz.gov/577/Residential-Rental-in-Paradise-Valley.

Mayor Bien-Willner also spoke about Town zoning, and affirmed the commitment to maintaining residential 1-acre zoning in PV, citing the unanimously approved council legislative agenda.

Coffee With the Mayor ended with a resident question and answer session with the Mayor, and the Mayor has asked residents for feedback on both the content and structure for this series. If you would like to provide feedback to the Mayor regarding this series, or if you have a topic you would like to see discussed at a future Coffee With the Mayor, please email [email protected] or [email protected].

Hillside Building Committee

The Hillside Building Committee reviews development plans for properties designated “Hillside” at Concept and Formal stages. Remodels, additions, and site improvements that are minor are Combined reviews.

The purpose of the Concept Review is to discuss, review, and give suggestions and guidance to the Applicant regarding the proposed development including location of building pad and accessory uses; relation to Significant Natural Features; preservation of existing vegetation; Grading concepts and their adaptation to the natural hillside topography.

The purpose of the Formal Review is to review all materials and plans for compliance with the goals, purposes, and specific ordinance criteria.

The purpose of the Combined Review is limited to the review of all materials and plans for remodels, additions and site improvements that are minor for compliance with the goals, purposes, and specific ordinance criteria.

On April 12, 2023, The Hillside Building Committee agenda included one Concept Review, one Combined Review, and two Formal Reviews:

7090 N Invergordon Road – Concept Review

The concept review is for an 8,951 square foot single family house on a 5.781 acre lot.  The concept for this modern desert home responds to the steep terrain by integrating a series of masses which nestle into the hillside and gradually climb up the mountain site.

The combined review is for a guest house and basement garage on a 1.180 acre lot.  Currently on site is an existing single-family residence built in 1958 and an accessory garage building. Tips to Stay Safe Around Water

As the weather flirts with 100 degrees, those sparkling blue pools look more and more inviting. Before you dive in, it's important to think about the safety of yourself and others around water, especially children and individuals with limited mobility.

Drowning is the third most common cause of unintentional injury-related deaths, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services. According to the CDC, Arizona ranks 17th nationally for accidental drowning deaths with an average of 1.43 deaths per 100,000 persons annually based on data collected from 2016 to 2020. Read more at https://www.cdc.gov/drowning/data/index.html

To help keep you and your loved ones safe, SRP has shared the following water and pool safety tips to help everyone enjoy the refreshing water in a safe way. View the full list of water safety tips on their website by clicking HERE.

  • Always assign a water watcher - do not ever assume "someone else is watching", or they might think you are too!
  • Enclose your pool with a self-closing, self-locking fence with vertical bars. Have multiple barriers in place as added safety measures.
  • Lock doors and windows and secure dog doors that lead to pools. Empty kiddie pools and buckets.
  • Learn how to perform CPR on infants, children and adults. Knowing can save lives.
  • Teach all kids to swim at an appropriate age and remember that it’s never too late for adults to learn how to swim.
  • Look for the U.S. Coast Guard-approved label on life jackets and ensure proper fit by weight.
