Town Meeting To Take Deep Dive into
Waimea’s ‘Critical Infrastructure’
| |
Thursday, September 5, 2024 - 5:30-7:15PM
@ New Community Center (former Mamane Bakery) - Hybrid!
| |
"Infrastructure seems to be on everyone’s mind; it’s often the root cause of, or contributor to community needs and concerns,” said WCA President Nancy Carr Smith to introduce the purpose of a deep dive into infrastructure at the next Waimea Town Meeting that will include an exceptional lineup of presenters from 5:30-7:15 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 5, 2024.
Infrastructure topics and guest presenters will include:
-
Energy: Innergex’s Hale Kuawehi 30 MW solar farm under construction on Parker Ranch land near West Hawai’i Concrete – presented by Cassandra Macy.
-
Energy: Hawaiian Electric’s Wildfire Safety Strategy which includes the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program – presented by Jennifer Zelko-Schlueter and Kevin Waltjen.
-
Housing: Hawaii Island Community Development Corporation's (HICDC) planned 43-lot subdivision in the Ouli land division on which self help homes will be built by owner occupants. The project sits on a 14.3 acre portion of the site donated by Marc and Lynne Benioff {see map below) for the purpose of developing housing within reach by working families. Presenter will be Executive Director Keith Kato.
-
Transportation: State Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen will provide an overview of state airports, harbors and highways as well as Waimea-specific projects with time for questions.
WCA’s September Town meeting will be in person at the new Community Center (former Mamane Bakery – 64-1056 Mamalahoa Hwy., 96743). As always, the meeting will be streamed “live” on WCA’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/WaimeaCommunityAssociation. It may also be viewed “live” via YouTube by going to www.WaimeaTown.org for a link. The meeting will be saved to Facebook and YouTube for on-demand viewing thereafter.
Also, as always, questions are welcome – ideally in advance – by emailing WaimeaCommunityAssociation@gmail.com.
Also on the town meeting agenda will be an update by Waimea Community Policing representatives and the meeting’s spotlighted not-for-profit will be The Gathering Place @ St. James with Terri Greenwell, who will introduce their plan which envisions a center for nourishment, fellowship and learning, and celebrates the Waimea community. Described as “a dream in the works,” it will convert St. James’ open-air, rusty, dusty but very intensely used pavilion into a large meeting/dining hall with glass doors that open out to the lawn, a full commercial kitchen, restrooms and needed dry and cold storage for the weekly Waimea Community Meal and other community activities.
Following The Gathering Place briefing, baskets will be passed to encourage attendees to contribute to the project or to go online to do so at www.stjameshawaii.org/ministries/the-gathering-place.

Hawai'i Community Foundation Awards Over $400K from the Richard Smart Fund to 18 Programs Supporting Waimea
Series of community conversations helped prioritize needs in support of a thriving Waimea
On Thurs., Aug. 29, 2024, Hawai‘i Community Foundation (HCF) announced the award of $415,770 from the Richard Smart Fund to 18 programs supporting culture, education, health, and safety in Waimea.
Community organizations and residents participated in a series of conversations throughout 2023 that helped to advise the Richard Smart Fund and HCF on the top priorities and greatest needs of community members.
The late Richard Palmer Kaleioku Smart established the Richard Smart Fund at HCF when he created the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust to support healthcare, educational, and charitable giving for the Waimea community on Hawai'i Island. From 2001 to 2023, HCF distributed over $7.7 million to nonprofit organizations serving Waimea.
“These grants from the Richard Smart Fund are the result of Waimea community members describing the future they want for Waimea, a future where all of the residents of the community understand and embody their kuleana for each other and the ʻāina,” said HCF director of donor relations for Hawai‘i Island Diane Chadwick.
“The funding also aligns with HCF’s long-term strategy to elevate community voices and position Hawai‘i as a model for local and global civic responsibility and collaborative policy development.”
