Boston Post Road Improvements

Take our Survey!

The NYS Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is reviewing potential safety and roadway improvements to US Route 1 (the Boston Post Road).

The project is still in development, and the NYSDOT wants to hear from you. Please take a moment to complete the survey. It will help the NYSDOT understand how residents, businesses, drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and others experience the Boston Post Road, and what changes they would like to see.

While we encourage residents to share feedback with NYSDOT, please note that Boston Post Road is a State roadway and this is a State-managed project. All decisions regarding changes or improvements are made solely by NYSDOT.

Town Re-Certified by NYS as a “Climate Smart Community at the Highest (Silver) Level!

The Town is Now Ranked 5th out of the

1,700 Communities In NYS!!

We were thrilled to receive the official word from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation last week that the Town has, once again, attained this level.

New York State’s Climate Smart Communities(CSC) Certification program helps local governments save energy, reduce flood risk, address extreme heat, and develop other plans to demonstrate climate leadership. Certified communities have completed and documented a suite of actions that mitigate and adapt to climate change at the local level. Once documentation is submitted, the municipality accumulates points.

The Town of Mamaroneck has made reducing greenhouse gas emissions a priority through our energy and cost-saving programs such as installing EV charging stations, retrofitting Town buildings to reduce energy usage, installing LED bulbs in our streetlights, purchasing electric vehicles for municipal use,

participating in “Community Solar” programs, banning gasoline-powered leaf blowers, and so much more. Many of these actions have been funded by grants at no cost to the taxpayer.

Certified communities have proven their commitment to a sustainable future, and I'm so proud that the Town of Mamaroneck is a leader among them.

Grants, Grants, Grants!

We were thrilled to receive notification this past month that two grants the Town applied for through the Westchester County Flood Mitigation Program have been awarded.

Flood Mitigation Project One

”2026 Storm Sewer Improvements" Project ($1,556,900.00 Awarded)

This project addresses flooding in three priority subbasins: Subbasin 1 --Fenimore Road; Subbasin 3 -- Country Road; and Subbasin 13 -- Old White Plains Road/Gate House Lane where inadequate stormwater infrastructure affects roadways, emergency access, and adjacent properties.

Across all three subbasins, new infrastructure will be installed to improve the collection of stormwater runoff and mitigate flooding during severe rainfall events based upon the recommendations of the Town’s 2023 Comprehensive Drainage Evaluation project report.

Flood Mitigation Project Two

"Larchmont Dam Valve Replacement and Controls Upgrade" Project ($196,500.00 Awarded)

This project improves Town operation and controls for the Reservoir bypass release valve and provides real-time monitoring to reduce downstream flood risk.

The project will install a motorized valve, water-level sensors, and security cameras connected to a secure data portal, allowing remote operation and monitoring while eliminating safety concerns by reducing the need for staff to access the dam during hazardous weather.

The project is expected to benefit the approximately 750 residential and commercial structures in flood-prone areas of the Sheldrake River, downstream of the reservoir. The project will also help protect roadways, drainage systems, utilities, and emergency access routes that serve those areas.

Through improved management of the reservoir storage capacity before and during storm events, the project provides flood risk reduction benefits to a multijurisdictional watershed area and the resident population and businesses within it.

September 11th: 25th Anniversary

We held our annual Tri-Municipal September 11th Commemoration earlier this month. The ceremony brought together first responders, veterans, clergy, public officials, local scouting troops, and residents to remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. We also remembered those first responders from our community whose service and selfless actions on September 11, 2001 contributed to 9/11-related illnesses and, ultimately, their deaths. It is important to come together each year, as a community, to remember, to support one another, and to educate those in our community who were born after the horrific events of that day.

Dedication of Engine 37 in

Memory of Dennis Tortorella

After the 9/11 commemoration ceremony, the Town Board and I proceeded to the Town of Mamaroneck Firehouse for the dedication of Engine 37 in memory of Dennis Tortorella. Dennis served the TMFD actively and ably for over fifty years before succumbing to a 9/11-related illness. It was a fitting tribute to someone who had given so much to our community.

Introducing the Sheldrake River Trails

Digital Walkbook

The Sheldrake River Trails' original "Walk Book" was an environmental guide published by the Town's then-named Conservation Advisory Committee way back in 1984! The book featured trail descriptions and illustrations for self-guided observation of plants, trees, etc. along the Sheldrake River Trails.

Town resident and high school student, Raphael Sutiono, spearheaded a project to digitize this guide, transforming it into an interactive online guide. Visitors can access the guide on their smartphones through QR codes located at trail stations throughout the property, with each station offering information designed to encourage observation, learning, and interaction with the surrounding environment. Raphael worked with our Conservation Department's Elizabeth Aitchison, Sustainability Collaborative co-chair Mark Kramer, as well as the Sheldrake Environmental Center's Jocelyn Kleinman.

The Sheldrake River Trails Digital Walkbook is available on the Town of Mamaroneck’s website.

They also hold events such as the annual Repair Café, Compost Giveaway Day, Tree Walks, and more. If you would like to make your community a more sustainable place to live, or are just curious to hear about their work, please consider attending a meeting. All are welcome! Meetings are generally held on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at the Mamaroneck Senior Center.
