It’s official. After a two-year break, the Town’s beloved Family Day is back and ready to celebrate its 44th year!
The theme for this year is “Qualicum Beach in Bloom” to celebrate not only the Year of the Garden, but the “new season” after COVID-19 restrictions have lifted.
The day features all the favourites including a pancake breakfast (8:30 am at the Civic Centre), street parade (12 pm along Second Avenue West), and tons of games, activities and entertainment for all ages at the Community Park (1-4 pm). And to wind up the day, relax in the Ravensong Aquatic Centre for a Free Swim, from 4-7pm.
“The community is ready to come out of hibernation, and we are excited to be able to create a multi-generational celebration of family”, says Jean Young, Chair of the Family Day Committee.
“The Town has had an unprecedented two years of COVID-19 related restrictions, and now we get to enjoy some community-wide fun in our beautiful Town once again. With the event being held outdoors it provides a good way for many to safely get involved, and we are hoping that the community will come out to enjoy time together again”, says Mayor Brian Wiese.

New Traffic Calming for Highway 19A |

It’s all going to plan. The Town’s Age-Friendly Transportation Plan!
Created over years of consultation, the Age-Friendly Transportation Plan has a goal to improve the mobility for persons of all ages and abilities, especially those who choose active modes of transportation. Two areas prioritized for traffic calming on Highway 19A will receive the following upgrades:
Hemwsorth Road:
- a posted speed limit of 50 km/hr;
- a marked crosswalk with pedestrian-activated flashing lights;
- median islands;
- widened shoulders; and
- a new streetlight.
Rodway Trail:
- a posted speed limit of 50 km/hr;
- a marked crosswalk with pedestrian-activated flashing lights;
- curb extension;
- a raised island; and
- a new streetlight.
The work is largely complete and is just waiting for delivery of the lights held up in shipping.

In Person Council Meetings |

In accordance with recently updated Provincial public health orders, the Town is pleased to welcome the public back to in-person Council Meetings and Public Open Houses.
The meetings are held in the Council Chamber at Town Hall, 660 Primrose Street, Qualicum Beach. Council and select staff will attend in person, and capacity limits will be monitored, and if required, alternative viewing location(s) will be provided.
Proof of vaccination is not required to attend these meetings and masks may be worn according to personal preference. If you are sick or not feeling well, we ask that you please stay home.

The Town recently completed its 2021 Parking & Traffic Survey Report to determine the demand and availability of public parking within the Town’s commercial core.
The results showed that while there is extremely high demand for on-street parking in some areas at peak times, other areas are underutilized throughout the day.
With this data, the Town is now able to update its parking management strategy to effectively manage public parking. For more information refer to the Parking Management Strategy webpage at qualicumbeach.com/parking

Come join in "Freedom of the Town" ceremonies, where the Town of Qualicum Beach and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 will "bestow the right, privilege, honour, and distinction of marching with colours flying, bayonets fixed, and drums beating to 19 Mission Support Squadron, 19 Wing Comox within the bounds of the Town."

The Town is pleased to announce the appointment of Lou Varela as the new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) starting May 16, 2022.
Ms. Varela’s recent roles include CAO for the District of Oak Bay and CAO for the Town of Creston. With over 20 years in planning, management and leadership roles in municipal government, her success has been founded on building collaborative teams and maximizing organizational effectiveness.
Ms. Varela is also a member of the Planning Institute of BC, Canadian Institute of Planners and Local Government Management Association.
Mayor Wiese says, “We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Varela to the Town of Qualicum Beach. With her extensive experience in municipal government, we are confident that our organization and our growing community will benefit from her leadership”.

Spring is the time to give our yards some TLC after the long winter months, and it is also time for Town water meter readings.
While doing your yard maintenance, please think of us and clear around Town infrastructure to provide easy access for our crews to take water meter readings.
Waterworks Regulations Bylaw No. 713 states a service fee of $100 will be charged to property owners should Town crews have to expose an obscured water meter box in order to read the meter.

Public Hearing - April 27
If adopted, Bylaw No. 580.112, 2019 would change the zoning for the subject property from Residential 1 (R1) to Residential 12 (R12), and would change the Subdivision District from Subdivision District ‘B’ to Subdivision District ‘D’ to permit a 16 lot subdivision. A maximum of two dwellings, in the form of duplexes or single-family dwellings with garden suites or secondary suites, would be permitted on each parcel.
If adopted, Bylaw No. 800.03, 2019 would change the land use designation from Estate Residential to Single-family Residential and include the subject property in the Urban Containment Boundary. Section 2.2.6 Rural, Policy #7 will be removed.

No Dogs on the Beach
Dogs are not permitted on any public beach between March 1 to April 30 (on-leash or off-leash). Dog owners may be subject to a fine of $100, as per Animal Control Bylaw No. 649.

Parks & Recreation Committee Vacancy
The Town is currently seeking a Member at Large for the Select Committee on Parks & Recreation, for a term ending December 2023.
The committee provides input, service and advice to Council and staff on matters referred by Council that are relevant to parks and recreation within the Town. Committee background (minutes, Terms of Reference, etc.) can be viewed on the Town of Qualicum Beach website (qualicumbeach.com/select-committee-on-parks-recreation) or at the Municipal Office. All appointments are on a volunteer basis and members serve without remuneration

Notice of Parcel Tax Review
For those who have received written notification from the Town of Qualicum Beach, notice is given that the Parcel Tax Roll Review Panel will meet to hear complaints, and to review and correct the Assessment Rolls on April 27, 2022, at 9:45 am in the Council Chamber at Town Hall, 660 Primrose Street, Qualicum Beach. The panel will hear complaints as to:
- Ensure names and addresses of the owners are correct;
- Whether or not the parcels of land abut the water and/or sewer mains; and
- Errors or omissions respecting the inclusion of property on the roll.
The Parcel Tax Assessment Rolls for water and sewer will be open for inspection at Town Hall, 9 am - 4pm, Monday to Friday (excluding stat holidays), from April 7 to April 26. Notice of complaints must be received by the Town at least 48 hours prior to the meeting time. Written notices may be sent to qbtown@qualicumbeach.com or dropped off at Town Hall.
