Airfield Lighting Grant

The Qualicum Beach Airport received $1,395,360 from Transport Canada’s Airport Capital Assistance Program to perform important airfield lighting upgrades, including runway and taxiway LED edge lights.

Work commenced at the airport on July 25, 2022, occurring between 10 pm to 6 am to minimize disruption to aircraft traffic. Night work will continue until mid September, after which time the work will switch to days. The project is expected to be completed in early 2023.

Emergency Grant

The Town of Qualicum Beach received $25,000 from the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) to install a 150Kw generator at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre.

The generator will supply continuous emergency power to ensure local and regional emergency functions can maintain operations during power outages and critical events.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $125,000 and the Town gratefully accepts this grant to help alleviate the cost of this essential infrastructure.

Backyard Poultry

Since 2016 Council has been exploring the possibility of allowing backyard poultry in the Town. A pilot project was conducted in 2017, and staff launched a survey in September 2021. Results and concerns were reviewed, including issues with rodents, public health, and noise. Staff also conducted research on similar municipality bylaws for possible options.

In April 2022, Council approved the keeping of chickens and ducks (maximum 6), with guidelines around:

  • Minimum parcel size.
  • Types of poultry allowed
  • Setbacks and sizes for coops and runs
  • Slaughter and sale of products
  • Storage of food
  • Management of manure
