New Council Receives Warm Welcome

The Inaugural Meeting of Council on November 7 ushered in the newly elected 2022-2026 Mayor & Council. The event was well attended by the public and local dignitaries who warmly welcomed the new Council (pictured above from left: Councillor Scott Harrison, Councillor Jean Young, Mayor Teunis Westbroek, Councillor Anne Skipsey, and Councillor Petronella Vander Valk).

Piper Jim McKnight led the procession, and Chief Michael Recalma welcomed the new Council on behalf of the Qualicum First Nation. The Town Crier, Len Mustard, performed a stirring official cry, John Paeng led the singing of the National Anthem, and Constable Steve Pope and Staff Seargent Travis De Coene honourably represented the RCMP. The Honorable Judge Brian Harvey presided over Mayor and Council as they swore oaths of office and promised to faithfully lead and serve the people of Qualicum Beach.

Mayor Teunis Westbroek provided the Inaugural Address, thanking the outgoing Mayor Brian Wiese for his service and dedication to the community during the previous term. Teunis also thanked his wife and family for their unwavering support, and expressed his desire for a collaborative and unified Council that fosters trust, transparency and integrity.

A public reception with appetizers and refreshments was hosted by the Town, providing an opportunity for the public to meet the newly elected Council.

Fire Department Launches New Website

The Qualicum Beach Fire Department may have just turned 75, but they are still keeping up with the times, and have launched their new website, www.qbfirerescue.com.

The website provides the opportunity to tour the station, explore the apparatus, and learn how the department operates, from responding to calls to running its Youth Fire Camp.

Further resources include home fire safety, outdoor burning, department activities, and a Frequently Asked Questions page. They even have a one-click “QR code”, with a fun dinosaur icon that allows phone cameras to quickly link to the site.

Visit the website to get to know your local Fire Department www.qbfirerescue.com

East Village Phase 2 Work Commences

Work for Phase 2 of the East Village Revitalization will commence on November 15, 2022.

Due to the extensive work taking place, Second Avenue East will be closed from November 21 until project completion.

Work in the intersection of Fir Street and Second Avenue East will be intermittently reduced to single-lane traffic when required.

The contractor is committed to ensuring workable access for the Naked Naturals Whole Foods warehouse site and maintaining through-access and parking for the Farmers' Market where possible.

This project will transform the area into a unique, energetic neighborhood, and attract new economic activity in the Town’s commercial area, as well as create a residential base to support economic growth.

The proposed project end date is April 2023, subject to weather conditions.

For more information on the project visit www.qualicumbeach.com/_eastvillage.
