2022 Volunteer Appreciation

Thrilled to be back in person after a 2 year hiatus, the Town honoured volunteers in the community during their annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception.

This event is the Town's opportunity to express appreciation for the many volunteers who dedicate hours, days, months and even years to bettering the community in Qualicum Beach.

The winner of the 2022 Above & Beyond Award was the St. Stephens’ Community Meal Program, chosen by Council for its outstanding dedication to those in need throughout the Oceanside area. St. Stephens' requested that their prize be vouchers from local food suppliers to go back into their program.

The volunteer groups and committee members honoured this year are listed on the 2022 Volunteer Appreciation Recipients Award displayed in the Town Hall foyer, along with the Above and Beyond Volunteer Award plaque.

Pictured above are St. Stephens' Community Meal Program volunteers Gail Berry, Earl Geddes, Pierre Pare, and Carol Pare.

Rodway Trail Opens

The Town is pleased to announce the completion of the Rodway Trail. The trail has been completely restored and features a new graded access point, and engineered stairs that create a continuous trail from the upper plateau on Arbutus Street to the waterfront.

The project started as the COVID-19 pandemic hit and was immediately affected by supply chain issues and labour shortages. Nonetheless, with persistence from staff, the project was able to reach completion within grant deadlines. The total project cost was approximately $150,600 and funding of $100,000 was received from the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development through their Community Development Grant funding stream.

Bob Weir, Director of Engineering & Capital Projects for the Town says, “We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia in this important project. The Town has long wanted to restore this trail and provide greater access for West Qualicum Beach residents to the beachfront for their everyday use. We also recognize that the more trail linkages we have between our uptown commercial core and the waterfront, the more it creates recreation tourism opportunities, and benefits our local economy.”

New Traffic Reader Board

In a commitment to safer roads a new solar powered speed reader board has been installed on Highway 19A near Hall Rd.

The reader has been installed in hopes of reducing speeds along this busy corridor. The board displays various indicators including the recorded speed, a slow down message, and a happy or sad face, based on speed compliance.

The supply and installation of the reader board cost approximately $9400, with $5600 of funding gratefully received from ICBC.

In addition to this new speed reader board, the Town has also implemented multiple traffic improvement measures this year, including 3 speed counters (portable), two pedestrian-activated lights and crossings on Highway 19A, and a speed reduction on Rupert Road.

We hope enjoy being smiled at as you drive past the reader board.
