Airport Consultation Final Report

After six months of stakeholder and public consultation, the Airport Consultation Plans final report was presented at the February 7, 2024, Regular Council meeting. The purpose of the Plan was to develop a common knowledge base for Council’s decision-making.

The consultation process gathered information on subjects including Airport services, travel, values, medevac operations and training, Airport noise, local economic impact, Airport facilities and communication. While the information that was gathered was generally positive, there were concerns brought forward relating to noise, helicopter training, the use of AVGAS low leaded fuel (LL100), communication on Airport-related issues and response to public inquiries.

To assist with public concerns, the Town created a complaint tracking system on the Town’s website. The online form allows the public to submit concerns relating to the Airport, tracks actions and facilitates data collection. The Airport Complaint Contact Form is available at qualicumbeach.com/airport.

Recommendations from the final report will be considered as part of Council's strategic initiatives in 2025 for an Airport Masterplan. There will also be a scheduled bi-annual open house (as a Committee of the Whole meeting) for the public to have a regular scheduled opportunity for the public to provide input to Council on Airport-related matters.

New 'Green' Fire Truck

The Town welcomes the addition of Ladder 58, a groundbreaking apparatus specifically designed to cater to the unique needs of Qualicum Beach and its community.

One of the unique elements of the L58 is that although it’s red, it’s also green! Equipped with eco-friendly idle mitigation technology, it automatically switches to battery power to run emergency lighting, heating, and air conditioning when not actively engaged in firefighting operations. This reduces fuel consumption, minimizes environmental noise, and extends the engine’s lifespan.

Equipped with a platform at the end of the 100-foot ladder, it facilitates safer patient transfers to the ground and enables below-grade rescues. It also offers exceptional horizontal reach, providing better access to buildings.

Overall, this new Ladder 58 is a much more advanced piece of apparatus than its predecessor (now retired) that will empower more efficient and effective emergency responses in our community.
