Our Hearts Are With Sloan Mattingly's Family

The sad news that seven-year-old Sloan Mattingly passed away earlier this week has left our entire community heartbroken. Our deepest condolences remain with the Mattingly family during this difficult time. There will be a moment of silence for Sloan at tomorrow's Friday Night Music concert at 6 p.m. and at the Town Commission Meeting on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

The Town has been in contact with the Mattingly family and grief counseling services have been offered by the Broward Sheriff's Office. If you would like to support the Mattingly family, a family friend has set up a GoFundMe page to accept donations.

The incident, along with the topics of lifeguards, Ordinances, and requests for a memorial for Sloan will be discussed at our Town Commission Meeting on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

Below is the most recent update we have from the Broward Sheriff’s Office. This information was provided at noon, yesterday, February 21, 2024, and immediately posted to our website and social media pages. As more updates become available, we will share them.

At approximately 3:16 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20., Broward County Regional Communications received a call reporting two children were trapped in the sand near 4424 El Mar Drive in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded immediately. On scene, emergency personnel located two siblings, 9-year-old Maddox Mattingly and his 7-year-old sister, Sloan Mattingly. Paramedics transported the girl to Broward Health Medical Center. Later that day, Sloan Mattingly was pronounced deceased. Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit detectives responded to investigate.

The preliminary investigation revealed the children and their parents were on vacation from Indiana. Investigators say the children were digging a hole in the sand when they were trapped. The circumstances into this incident remain under investigation.

This information should be considered preliminary, and as with any developing situation, the details may change. If you have questions about the incident, please contact the Broward Sheriff’s Office at (954) 764-4357.
