New License Plates to be Issued in May of 2025
In accordance with LD 1965, “An Act to Authorize the Secretary of State to Provide a New General Issue of License Plates," which became law last year, the current Chickadee license plates will be replaced with two new plate design options: The Pine Tree with North Star plate or a plain plate with blue identification number and lettering. The new plates will be issued starting in May of 2025.
Mainers who want to reserve their current plate numbers, including vanity plates and low-digit plates, will have the option to do so. A reservation process will begin this spring to accommodate those wishing to retain their current plate numbers. Mainers who have a specialty plate (agricultural, conservation, animal welfare, etc.) will not be impacted by the transition to the new plate designs.
