Heritage Week Highlight: The Battle of Foxtrap

Mayor Darrin Bent proclaimed February 17-23 as Heritage Week in Conception Bay South. Throughout this week we celebrate our rich heritage and learn about our storied past. Read below one of the events that shaped the future of our Town: The Battle of Foxtrap.

The Battle of Foxtrap was the name given to a political struggle in Newfoundland during the 19th century. The island was deeply divided over issues such as religion, economic hardship, and whether to join Canada or remain independent.

In 1878, politician William Whiteway proposed building a railway, sparking heated debate. Some saw it as a path to modernization - opening new areas for settlement and business, while others feared it would be too expensive and push the colony into debt.

As tensions flared over railway surveying in the South Shore of Conception Bay, Judge Daniel Prowse worked to reassure residents, enlisting clergy and local leaders to calm fears. While some communities, like Holyrood, supported the project, others, such as Upper Gullies, fiercely resisted, believing misleading rumors that the railway would lead to land seizures. Violent clashes erupted, with mobs attacking surveyors and seizing equipment. In response, Prowse led a force of constables to disperse the crowd at Foxtrap Bridge, arresting key protesters, including three women.

Despite the crackdown, opposition remained strong, with continued hostility toward surveyors. However, no further violence occurred until similar resistance arose in Tilton. By 1881, railway construction was progressing rapidly, with hundreds of laborers clearing land and laying tracks. As workers reached Manuels, signs of renewed conflict appeared, with the same women who had led the Foxtrap protest preparing to act again.

The Town of Conception Bay South has a four-part heritage book series, including The Battle of Foxtrap, which explores this pivotal moment in Newfoundland’s history. You can find these books at the Conception Bay South Public Library or for purchase at Town Hall. Read more about our heritage here.

Winter Safety: Risk of Flooding

Flooding is Canada’s most common natural disaster, and its severity is increasing. Taking proactive measures now can help protect your property and ensure your safety.

Heavy rain and melting snow bring an increased risk of flooding, and now is the time to take steps to protect your home and stay safe:

Public Notice:

Pedestrian-Activated Crosswalk Out of Order

Due to unexpected damage to the traffic light pole, the pedestrian-activated crosswalk west of Manuels River is temporarily out of service. The replacement of infrastructure and reinstallation of the flashing lights is expected to take several months, as these poles are custom-made, with each one fabricated to meet specific engineering requirements.

The pedestrian crosswalk remains, however the flashing lights will not be operational. For added safety, a pedestrian underpass is available as an alternative to crossing the road directly.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
