Changes to the bag tag program coming
Starting July 4, residents will be able to place up to two bags or containers/items out for pickup every other week on their regularly scheduled collection days. Any additional waste will require a bag tag. Residents can put up to a maximum of five bags/items of garbage out, two free and three paid. Tags are now $2 each and are being sold in groups of five for $10. Previously purchased bag tags remain valid and can be used after July 4. The Town is also introducing a $12 fee for large items such as furniture, mattresses, box springs, toilets, appliances and carpeting.

Every Child Matters crosswalk
The Town, in partnership with the Chippewas of Georgina Island, held the official ribbon cutting of the Every Child Matters crosswalk on May 14. It is located in front of the Island View Business Centre/Georgina Island Ferry dock. The crosswalk is designed to bring awareness that all children matter and to bring awareness to the adult survivors who are continuing to heal from the trauma of residential schools. The unique design of the crosswalk has been inquired about from municipalities from southern Ontario to the Yukon.

Pride Month
Georgina raised the rainbow pride flag at Ravenshoe and Woodbine, and the Civic Centre. The Town will hold an official flag-raising ceremony on Monday, June 13, at the Civic Centre. To learn more about Pride festivities in York Region, visit yorkpride.ca.

Waterfront Parks Master Plan
Join us on June 20 or 21 for virtual meetings on phase two of the Waterfront Parks Master Plan. The Town is preparing a Waterfront Parks Master Plan to establish a vision and framework for implementation and direction for operations and management of its waterfront parks. Volunteer Award of Merit
The Town honoured members of the community with the 2020-21 Volunteer Award of Merit at a ceremony at the ROC on Friday, May 27. Volunteers help build communities, and the Town appreciates and thanks them for their efforts. The pandemic prevented the Town from recognizing volunteers in 2020, so these awards honour individuals, teams and groups who volunteered in 2020 or 2021. The Town also recognized Lorraine Hackenbrook as the 2020-21 Citizen of the Year.

2022 Municipal Election
Are you thinking about becoming a candidate?
The nomination period for candidates is now open and closes on Aug. 19, 2022 at 2 p.m. Information and nomination forms can be found at georgina.ca/Election2022.
Did you know? For the first time, the Town will use online voting, along with tabulators, for the 2022 Municipal Election. Online voting will be available from Oct. 8 to Oct. 23 at noon. The last day to vote is Oct. 24, 2022.

Summer program registration
Registration for summer recreation programs and swim lessons is now open for residents. It opens on June 14 at 8:30 a.m. for non-residents.

Sunday, June 19 at the Georgina Leisure Pool. Dad swims for free with one paid admission. *Admission fee and wristband policy applies.

Splash Pads
Looking to cool off? Town splash pads are now open. The sun sails (shade canopies) are also in place at the ROC. You can enjoy the splash pads from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The Town has four splash pads – the ROC, Whipper Watson Park, Const. Garrett Styles Park and Julia Munro Park.

Georgina Farmers’ Market
The Georgina Farmers’ Market takes place every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Link. It features more than 30 vendors offering a wide range of local products including produce, meats, baked goods and crafts, all from local vendors.

Turtles
June is turtle egg laying season. To protect their habitat, roadside mowing will not occur in areas that are known turtle egg-laying areas. We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during this brief period.

Bi-weekly yard waste collection has started and continues until the end of November. Check your waste calendar, download the free Recycle Coach app or visit georgina.ca/WasteandRecycling for more information.

Curbside giveaway days
Clear out the clutter in your home. The next Curbside Giveaway Day is June 25. Put your unwanted items at the curb from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other residents/neighbours can then take these items free of charge. Any unclaimed items must be removed by 5 p.m. and can only be put to the curb on that date.

Join the Summer Reading and Learning Club
Registration for Georgina Public Library’s Summer Reading Club is open. There are challenges for youth, teen and adult readers. Plus, prize draws throughout the summer. Join the Georgina Public Library for its launch party on June 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Keswick location.

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter? Do you live in Pefferlaw? Georgina Fire and Rescue Services is accepting applications for volunteer firefighters, and needs people from Pefferlaw. Applications are also being accepted for Keswick and Sutton. The deadline to apply is June 10.
