Town Supervisor
Chris Legg
As we enjoy the beauty of fall foliage, the Town prepares for winter and the new fiscal year starting on January 1, 2025.
We are excited to start a glass recycling program that will reduce costs. Our single stream disposal cost is about $200 per ton. Glass is the densest item, a significant percentage of the single stream weight. We are partnering with TOMRA to recycle our glass at no cost. TOMRA is supplying three containers to sort the glass by color: clear, amber, and green/others. Deposit your rinsed, food grade glass into the appropriate container by color next to the can/metal bin in the recycling building. Please deposit glass only, no ceramics, dishes/Pyrex, mirrors, or windowpanes, no wish-cycling please. Metal lids go into the can/metal bin. The bins for returnable-deposit bottles and cans remain nearby. Deposit refunds support our Outreach Program to assist residents. Our separation of corrugated cardboard and metal continues to reduce our single stream costs. Both commodities generate revenue at $90 per ton now, sometimes higher or lower, depending on the market. The only items for disposal in single stream are mixed paper, paperboard, and plastic. Staff can answer any questions and guide you to help reduce our disposal costs.
Cooling weather ended the Swap Shop season. Amy Rolleri led 41 volunteers who generously devoted time each Saturday to facilitate the reutilization of innumerable items. They endured varied weather with smiles. At closing, they loaded their vehicles to transport remaining items to area charities. Their effort not only saved us thousands of dollars in disposal costs but also diverted tons of usable items from the landfill.

What Factors Does the Assessor Use
to Determine Your Assessment?
Councilor Sue Dove
Article 2
There are three main factors that an Assessor takes into consideration in determining your assessment. These are called approaches: Market Approach, Cost Approach, or Income Approach.
For residential properties in Skaneateles our Assessor uses the Market Approach. The Assessor will take into consideration recent sales for like-type properties. For instance, a property on the lake will only be compared to another property of like size and character that is also located on the lake. A home in the Village will only be compared to another home in the Village.
Mike Maxwell, our Town Assessor and lead on the 2025 Reassessment project said, “The Town of Skaneateles is unique because of the location factors being so different. The lake and the Village properties are the highest value areas. The rural portion of the Town in the Skaneateles School District is vastly different than the rural part in the other school districts (Marcellus, Elbridge, and Moravia.) This makes the valuation very difficult because all these factors come into play in a very complicated market. The same type of house in any one of these areas can be assessed thousands of dollars differently. I have broken up the Town in valuation NEIGHBORHOODS. These groups/neighborhoods each carry a different land value per acre, house value per square foot, etc. My goal is to be as fair and equitable as possible in assessing all properties in the Town of Skaneateles.”

News from the
Parks Department
Sue Murphy
What a summer! Austin Park, The Charlie Major Nature Trail and The Conservation Area were very busy. The parks employees worked so hard to make sure the community could use the swimming area, farmers market, ballfields, and parking lot in Mandana for their boat trailers.

Parks Department Reservations Program- Continues to be a great success. We will, again, re-access the program over the winter to work out some of the kinks that we had, but overall, a great success.

The alerts are not just for the parks, it’s for water emergency, transfer station, swap shop, town clerk and the list goes on. Go to www.townofskaneateles.com and sign up. Moving Forward- Park Reminders
and Updates!
· When walking out at the Conservation Areas, please wear bright colored clothing. It is hunting season, and the more we make ourselves visible, the safer we are.
· The Sims building will be closing and basketball lights turned off in the next few weeks for the winter and will open again in the spring. Thank you for your comments regarding the building, it is a great asset to the park and was greatly needed.
· Fall maintenance has begun and we will be on the walking path so please watch out for us when walking around the park. We don’t want to be in your way just as much as we know you don’t want to be in ours.
· Driving around the Austin Park Track is prohibited. Only service or emergency vehicles are permitted.
· No riding bikes on baseball/softball fields.
· Snow fences and reflector poles will be put out shortly.
Please leave them where they are. Even though the staff knows this path by heart, in the wintertime it’s a bit challenging, and having them in place helps with spring maintenance.
· Please continue to pick up after your pet. Mutt Mitt stations are available along the walking path.

SAVES
Jerry Schinaman
SAVES has been providing emergency medical services to the community for over 50 years. Originating as an all-volunteer organization, due to changing education and equipment requirements, SAVES now has a near 100% compensated staff. We continue to have an all-volunteer Board of Directors. We are currently conducting our annual fund-raising drive. We are currently preparing to replace an ambulance due to mechanical problems with one of our rigs. Contributions may be made through the SAVES website or by mailing contributions to SAVES at 77 Fennell Street, Skaneateles, NY.
“Dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.” This is something that we teach our children. We have noticed that some residents have called SAVES directly in emergencies. Although we have crews on duty 24 hours a day, our increased volume of calls means they may not be available when you call. Through the first 9 months of this year we have responded to 100 more calls than in 2023. If help is needed calling 9-1-1 is the only way to ensure a rapid response will occur. We also recommend preparing lists of medications for family members which can be accessed by first responders in an emergency.
The only thing more tragic than a death is a death that could have been prevented.
Instructions regarding CPR and AED use are offered the third Saturday of each month. First Aid classes are offered as needed. During First Aid classes, techniques for controlling traumatic bleeding are included. In the first 9 months of 2024, there have been 25 classes conducted by SAVES personnel. These classes were attended by 170 students. As in the past many of these students were regular attendees having their certification cards renewed after 2 years. But a large number, 30, were first-time attendees recognizing the importance of these life-saving techniques. We have also taught classes for parishioners from churches that have purchased emergency equipment. Call SAVES, 315 685-5217, for more information or to sign up. There is a fee for classes.
We are always looking for volunteer members. If you may be interested in volunteering, or you are not sure, stop in and see us. Personnel are always willing to conduct a tour of our facilities and discuss volunteering opportunities.
Finally, please remember we are now entering the winter season of snow-covered roads. Keeping driveways, walkways and steps clear will help ambulance personnel to reach you in case of an emergency.
