COST OF GAS INFORMATION

The weather is getting colder and the increase of gas usage has resulted in several inquiries on how the Town determines the cost of gas that is charged to residents.

The Town purchases gas from Gas Alberta Inc., which is part of a regulated Gas Co-op. Gas Alberta Inc. determines a natural gas rate each month and provides notification to the Town of this rate as well as proof that they are competitive in the market. The cost of gas is charged to consumers and remitted to Gas Alberta Inc. monthly.

Carbon tax is a federally regulated levy charged on each GJ of gas used. Carbon tax is collected from gas consumers and remitted to the federal government monthly. What the Town collects is exactly what we remit to Receiver General.

The remaining gas charges on the utility bill are to cover costs for the Town to operate the gas department and maintain the gas distribution system.

SNOW REMOVAL

As stated in the Snow and Ice Management Policy, the Town of Wainwright will conduct clearing of public roadways, sanding and snow removal on a priority basis to allow for prompt response by emergency services, access to hospital facilities, and reasonable vehicle access to the primary roadways, businesses, industries, schools, residences and recreational facilities.

Priority #1, Primary arterial (yellow on the map), are the major through roads that allow for travel across the entire town.

Priority #2, Access to Emergency Facilities & Schools, (green on the map), provides access to emergency facilities such as the Fire Hall, RCMP Detachment Building, Hospital, Airport runway, as well as roadways adjacent to the schools.

Priority #3, Primary Collector (blue on the map), provides access to the commercial, industrial and residential areas.

Priority #4, Primary Local (pink on the map), connects the residential or commercial properties to the road.

As shown on the Residential Snow Removal map, the town has been split into 4 zones for snow removal. These zones will be cleared on a rotating basis to provide for an equitable service to all residents.

The completion time for the entire town should be 10 to 14 days, depending upon snow accumulation, temperature, and unforeseen equipment breakdowns.

SNOW REMOVAL ON SIDEWALKS

Per Bylaw 2018-13, sidewalks must be cleared by the owners or occupants of the property within 48 hours after a snowfall.

WALLACE PARK UPDATE

Construction at Wallace Park is ongoing. The north bridge has been removed due to construction and repairs/upgrades. Walking trail use is still allowed (away from work that is being done) and we ask that you stay out of the construction area and off the ice as it is very thin.

KIDSPORT WAINWRIGHT

Funding requests for Kidsport Wainwright have been high in 2022. The organization has funded 70 children in the Wainwright area for a total of $20,000. Kidsport Wainwright typically supports around 25 to 30 children each year but the organization has been able to handle the increase thanks to the generous support from the community.
