An Introduction to Rock Outcrop
and Cliff Ecology
We often admire rock outcrops from afar, or sometimes here in Western North Carolina, we visit them while hiking. But perhaps we don’t realize that there’s more to these geological formations—and to their distinctive ecosystems—than meets the eye.
Botanist and ecologist Gary Kauffman, will discuss rock outcrops in the WNC mountains, including elevation, pH, and structure between different outcrops. Gary retired in 2025 following a 32-year tenure with the USDA National Forest in North Carolina, where part of his job covered 1.4 million US Forest Service-managed acres from the mountains to the coast. And much of his work involved plant communities and rare plants. Gary’s presentation will include a flowchart key, as well as plant species (some rare) that can be found between or near our mountains’ outcrops and cliffs. And though some of these species are more suitably enjoyed in their natural habitat, Gary will also identify some species that make suitable garden plants.
All are welcome to attend. Bring your own lunch, snack, or beverages to enjoy immediately following the program, if you’d like. The business meeting will begin soon thereafter. For more information, feel free to visit the Garden Club's website at: https://gardenclubofweaverville.org/.

Stormwater Runoff Facts Sheet & Stormwater Lawn Care
| | |
STORMWATER-FRIENDLY LAWN CARE
Spring will soon be upon us, and lawn care is on our minds. There are many easy things we can do to keep our lawns looking good while also protecting our water quality.
Follow these Tips from the Sodfather for stormwater-friendly lawn care:
-
Mow high and let the clippings lie – they contain 90% water, which is good for the lawn, and keeps nutrients out of waterways.
-
Keep yard waste off the street and away from storm drains and drainage ditches.
- Compost clippings and leaves to create your own natural fertilizer.
-
Have your soil tested before applying fertilizer and only apply it if needed.
-
Use phosphorous-free fertilizers unless your soil is lacking in 'P', and use slow-release nitrogen fertilizers or organic compost.
-
Only use the recommended amount of fertilizers, and don’t apply before windy or rainy days.
-
Reduce potable water usage by choosing native and drought-resistant plants, and by collecting rainwater in a rain barrel. Rainwater also contains nutrients so it can further reduce the need for fertilizer.
-
Do not overwater lawns and garden. Use a soaker hose, a porous hose that releases water directly to the ground, which can reduce overwatering that carries away fertilizers that would otherwise enrich lawns and gardens.
| | Save the Date- Arbor Day Program April 16th | |
The Weaverville Tree Board proudly sponsors Arbor Day on April 16th! This year we celebrate the creativity and talent of our local youth, as we showcase the poetry and artwork of the North Buncombe Middle and High School students. The 'Young Artists Competition' submission includes the junior division, grades 7 - 8, and senior division, grades 9 -12. Poetry and Artwork Themes: If I Were a Tree or My Favorite Tree will be displayed at the Community Center all through the month of April. During the Arbor Day program, we are planting trees at Lake Louise! So, Save the Date, Let's Celebrate! | NCDOT Upcoming Spring Litter Sweep | | |
