Time is Running Out: The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission is Enforcing New E-Bike Laws Beginning July 19th


The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has announced new E-Bike laws and requirements set to take effect starting on July 19th. Once the date commences, the following will be enforced:


Requirements:

  • All E-Bike operators must be at least 15 years of age
  • Must possess a valid driver's license, e-bike license, or e-bike permit
  • Must be able to provide e-bike insurance and registration
  • Wear a helmet at all times


To obtain an e-bike license:

  • Schedule an appointment for a permit
  • Pass Knowledge and Vision Tests
  • Schedule and pass a Road Test
  • Practice riding for 45 days unsupervised during daylight
  • Obtain the license at an NJMVC Licensing Center


For e-bike registration:

  • Secure e-bike insurance
  • Schedule a registration appointment
  • Provide ID and proof of ownership
  • Submit a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO) or a written affidavit if MCO is unavailable
  • Complete the registration process
