COVID-19 Updates & Information
Wednesday, May 22, 2020
Dear Residents,

Celebrating Memorial Day with the parade and ceremony honoring those who have served the Country are important Cranford traditions that sadly, we are not able to enjoy this year.
However, the day will be marked with a small, private ceremony in Memorial Park with the Color Guard of VFW Post 335, Chaplain Jim Silkenson, and Mayor Patrick Giblin reading the names. This ceremony will be shown live on TV35 and replayed throughout the day. You can also view it on TV35 Facebook page .
Representatives of the Cranford Police and Fire Departments will place a wreath at the monument in Memorial Park and Mayor Giblin will toss a wreath into the Rahway River to honor those lost at sea.
Don Sweeney will then hang the Cranford 86 banners at Memorial Park and at 10 am Girl Scouts throughout town will step outside their homes to say the Pledge of Allegiance and sing God Bless America.
Wear a mask for yourself. Wear a mask for others.

We hope that you find some fun and safe ways to enjoy the outdoors this weekend. Whether you go for a bike ride, a walk or jog, please wear a mask and keep a six-foot distance. Today, Governor Phil Murphy issued an Executive Order that expands attendance at outdoor gatherings from 10 people to 25 people, effective immediately. This includes public and private recreational campgrounds. Indoor gatherings remain limited to 10 people. If you participate in a gathering, it is even more important to follow the guidelines that also include handwashing.
Today’s COVID-19 Case Updates) as of noon today (includes May 21 & 22)

  • CRANFORD:  455 confirmed cases (3 NEW: 2 community/1 LTC); 90 fatalities 0 NEW: (13 in community/77 in LTC)
  • UNION COUNTY: 15,191 confirmed cases (69 new); 1,018 fatalities (24 new)
  • NJ: 152,719 confirmed cases (2,551 new); 10,985 fatalities (240 new).

Beware of Contact Trace Scammers

Even in the midst of this extraordinary emergency, there are some who will prey on the public’s fears and  attempt to take advantage or defraud people, especially the elderly. If you receive a telephone call or text:
  • NEVER give Social Security or bank information. Contact tracers do not need that information.
  • Contact tracers DO NOT text people; legitimate contact tracing usually includes a call to educate the person, advise they may have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 and be at risk and symptoms to look out for.
Downtown Parking Changes to Support Curbside Business Activity

On Tuesday, the Township will lift the free parking order on streets in the downtown but the parking lots will remain free for the time being. It was great news when retailers were able to join restaurants and food businesses in offering curbside pick up of merchandise. The businesses are counting on convenient parking for their customers so we ask the public to use the parking lots if you will be downtown for a longer period.
The Township Committee understands the need for convenient and available parking so customers can pull up, get their food or goods and leave. Resuming enforcement of street parking will ensure those spaces turnover regularly.
We encourage you to come downtown, walk around and window shop to see what stores have to offer. If you come by car and plan to be here for a while, park in one of the shopper lots where you can stay up to three hours.
We Are Here to Answer Your Questions.

We know you have questions during these uncertain times and while we may not always have the answers immediately, we will do our best to get the information you need. The Township Commissioners work closely every day with State and County representatives, our public safety, emergency management and professional staff on best practices for providing municipal services efficiently and safely, developing innovative and effective ways to restart businesses and recreation activities. This work and planning have been ongoing since the onset of the COVID-19 emergency. We are planning so that Cranford is prepared to meet the current and future challenges.

Thank you for your tremendous cooperation, patience and support.
