On Friday February 2nd, 2024, Mayor, Steve Schmidt, participated as a panelist, alongside neighboring Mayors and Committee Members at the Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey, Regional Economic Perspective: Burlington County.

Mayor Schmidt spoke to Chamber of Commerce Members, Legislators and various other community leaders about the strides Maple Shade has been making to retain and maintain businesses in our community. Audience members then had the opportunity to ask questions of the panelist about the programs, policies and procedures each community has put in place to help the business community and how together we are working to promote Burlington County as the most desirable county to work, live, eat and play.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Maple Shade Police Department kicked off the new year with a slice! Crust N’ Fire hosted our first ever “Pizza With Patrols”. Our goal for this event was to get our population out and about for a bite to eat and some socialization, who would normally be at home, alone, on a Wednesday afternoon. It was a success! We were able to meet with community members, young and old and enjoy a slice of pizza together. Lt. Dan O’Brien surprised us all with custard, courtesy of The Maple Shade Custard Stand. Thank you John and Joe Fischer! Thank you Maple Shade PBA 267, for financially supporting this event. Thank you to Crust N’ Fire for offering to host!

On January 22, 2024, The Maple Shade Police Department held it’s first ever Recruitment Night. This event was so well attended that we will be hosting a second one in February. If you are interested in a career in law enforcement, be on the look out for the date of our next recruitment event. We are looking for a few good men and women to join our team!

Congratulations to Captain Brian Weiss, Lt. Daniel O’Brien, Lt. Brian Davis, Sgt. Anthony Blinebury, Sgt. Scott Pacheco, Corporal Brian Martino, and Officer Zach Sheppard, who were all sworn in to their newly appointed positions on January 23, 2024.

On January 23, 2024, Chief Christopher Fletcher accepted the Accreditation Certificate from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. After many years of hard work and dedication, and under the leadership of Chief Fletcher, the goal was attained. Harry Delgado, Accreditation Director, mentioned that, The Maple Shade Police Department VOLUNTARILY entered this rigorous process, successfully proving their ability to meet 112 best practices or industry standards as identified by the NJ State Chief’s Association. In addition, there was not one single correction made when the on-site review of the Maple Shade Police Department was completed, which is not the norm and something to be proud of. Because of this, their performance was judged as exceptional.

Officer Wortmann and Therapy K-9 Ripley stopped by Mrs. Fernandes’ 3rd grade class for a visit and brought some fun school supplies for the students.

ATTENTION ALL POLICE TRADING CARD COLLECTORS!!!

If you have collected all of the trading cards on the check off sheet, please send an email to Cpl. Misty Weiss at [email protected], use “Trading Card” in the subject line. You will need to present every card listed on the contest sheet. We can’t wait to see how many winners are out there!

The Maple Shade Police Department would like to again remind township residents to remove all valuables from your parked vehicles, including keys and key fobs. Lock the doors to your vehicles and homes. Do not leave your vehicle running unattended. If you own a Honda, Kia, Mitsubishi or Hyundai, please make all attempts to park those vehicles in a well-lit driveway, as we have seen an uptick in catalytic converter thefts from these vehicles lately. Lastly, if you see something, say something!

Please call the Maple Shade Police Department at 856-234-8300 when you see suspicious activity happening.

WATER & SEWER UTILITIES

Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements

The utility recently experienced a mechanical failure on 2 of the 3 influent screw pumps. The pumps are critical to the system, essentially pumping the incoming waste into a tank for treatment. The mechanical failures caused the pumps to become noisy, but not inoperable.

Contracts are now in place for removal of the 2 Screw Pumps, reconditioning at the factory and equipment for bypass pumping while they are removed.

We are pleased to announce that the Screw Pump Reconditioning is underway. Within the last couple of weeks, by-pass pumping has been set-up allowing us to remove the first of two Screw Pumps slated for reconditioning. The first Screw pump has already been shipped and is now at the manufacturing facility to begin the work.

The next phase of the project is to place an additional by-pass pump on-line so that the remaining Screw Pump can be trucked out as well.

We are anticipating about a five-month turnaround time for the first pump to be returned, installed, and placed back into service.

At this time, we would again like to apologize for the noise and inconvenience that these pump issues have created and would ask for your continued patience as the project continues.
